Leroy Whitford, 69, of rural Brownstown, died late Friday night, Nov. 23, 2007.
Services with full military rites accorded by Mulberry Grove American Legion Post No. 1180 will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville, with the Rev. Joe Montgomery officiating. Visitation will be held two hours prior to services on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials: The family.
Mr. Whitford was born on March 22, 1938, in Fayette County, the son of Ruben Walter and Martha Ellen Ellis Whitford. He married Linna J. Vaughn in Smithboro on July 22, 1966.
He was reared near Davis Bridge and attended the Columbus School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 5, 1959, and served until March 30, 1961. He worked at Olin for seven years and then was engaged in farming for the Bingham farm and for Eddie Ulmer. He later became a correctional officer, working at Stateville Correctional Center and then at Graham Correctional Center, retiring in 2000.
He is survived by his wife; sons, David L. and his wife Cindy Whitford of Vandalia, and William H. and his wife Lanya Whitford of Nokomis; brother, Elvin G. Whitford of Greenville; sisters, Rosemary Coleman of Kell, Carolyn Bandy of Whitt and Velma of Indiana; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Melvin Whitford.
