A Springfield man is being held by federal authorities and a Springfield woman remains in Fayette County Jail after the couple was arrested for robbing First National Bank in Ramsey last Friday.
Fayette County States Attorney Stephen Friedel charged James Echols, 32, and Annette F. Michael-Jefferson, 45, with aggravated robbery after the two were apprehended a short time after allegedly taking money from the bank.
Officers with the Pana Police Department, Ramsey Police Department and Fayette County Sheriffs Office took Echols and Michael-Jefferson into custody just outside of Pana, Friedel said. The Illinois State Police were also involved in the effort to capture the two individuals.
At about 11:45 a.m., the sheriffs office and Ramsey Police responded to a call of a robbery at the bank.
Friedel said the charges filed against the two individuals allege that they obtained money from the bank.
No further details were given, including whether a weapon was displayed or use of a weapon was threatened.
In Fayette County Circuit Court, Judge James Roberts set Echols bond at $100,000 and Michael-Jeffersons bond at $25,0000.
While Michael-Jefferson remains in the county jail, Echols was released to the U.S. Marshalls Service on unrelated charges, Friedel said.
The charges that will ultimately be filed against Echols will be determined upon the completion of an ongoing investigation conducted by the sheriffs office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Ernie Chappel, president of First National Bank in Vandalia, Ramsey and Patoka, said the employees at the Ramsey bank did what they were supposed to do.
Im real proud of the way that the staff handled the situation, Chappel said.
