We tend to overlook and take for granted the freedoms and rights that we Americans enjoy each and every day of our lives.
More importantly, we have a tendency to forget about the men and women who have, throughout the history of our country, stepped forward to earn and protect those freedoms and rights our veterans.
Thus, its not too much to ask that we all take time this Sunday to remember and honor those veterans, as well as those who are currently serving in our armed forces.
Of course, one way to do so is to attend local Veterans Day programs, to join with others to pay tribute to our veterans, especially those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, their lives, so that we may continue living in a free country. The Vandalia American Legion will host one such program at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Weather permitting, Legion members also will be displaying their Avenue of Flags this Sunday. In that stirring display, flags are placed throughout the downtown area and in Fairlawn Cemetery.
But even if you choose not to be a part of those programs, we ask that you take at least a few minutes to remember our veterans. Its the very least that we can do.
