  • Meyer improves from 30th to 11th...

CHARLESTON – Vandalia sophomore Ethan Meyer went into last Thursday’s state preliminaries hoping to break the school’s triple jump record.

Coach Jim Dierkes hoped Meyer would add enough length to his 30th-ranked sectional jump to make the state finals.

As it happened, both of them got their wish.

  • Vonderheide, WSS again top SC...

South Central had beaten Windsor/Stew-Stras three times during the year prior to meeting the Blue Devils in last Saturday’s sectional title game.

But a healthy and effective Christian Vonderheide proved to be a big difference-maker.

Vonderheide struck out eight and allowed four hits for WSS and also had two hits, three runs and an RBI as the Blue Devils knocked off South Central, 5-0, in the championship game of the Class 1A North Clay Sectional.

  • Patoka's track qualifiers...

CHARLESTON – Patoka/South Central sophomore Chase Riley improved on his seed by eight places at last Thursday’s state track meet, despite running a slower time than he did at sectionals in the 200-meter dash.

Riley ran a 23.27 – a 10th of a second slower than he ran when he finished second at the Newton Sectional – but that was good for 14th overall at the Illinois High School Association Class 1A state preliminaries at O’Brien Stadium on the Campus of Eastern Illinois University.

  • Beasley dazzles for Post 95 in...

VANDALIA – A year off doesn’t seem to have hindered Connor Beasley’s ability to be an ace pitcher.

In his first competitive start since he pitched a couple of spot starts for Post 95 last June, Beasley pitched eight strong innings for Vandalia’s Sr. Legion squad on Monday, leading Post 95 to a 5-4 win against New Baden.

  • Three seniors earn All-SCC honors

Three Vandalia seniors were named all-conference by softball and baseball coaches in the South Central Conference.

Megan Godoyo earned two all-conference selections, including one spot on the first team.

Godoyo was named the first-team designated hitter/utility player after leading Vandalia’s offense in South Central Conference play this season, and also earned third-team pitching honors.

Offensively, she hit .360 in the conference season, smacking one home run, two triples and two doubles, while driving home seven runs and scoring four times.

  • Vandalia, Patoka and Ramsey to...

Other teams in the field are: Nashville, Heritage/Villa Grove, Edwards County, Breese Central, Mt. Carmel, Seneca and Decatur LSA.

Games will be played at Vandalia Community High School, Vandalia Junior High School and Vandalia Elementary School.

  • Lady Vandals to open summer...

The Vandalia High School summer softball team will begin play next Tuesday with an alumni doubleheader.

The Lady Vandals will meet former Vandalia players at 6 p.m. in the first of five matchups.

Open fields will be held from 9:30-11 a.m. on July 8, 10, 15 and 17. Any player ages 8-18 is welcome to attend.
