  • Warriors have improved since...

MULBERRY GROVE – When Patoka opened the season on Nov. 25 against Odin at the Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament, there were a lot of unknowns.

Gone was the team’s best post player from a year before and a scrappy guard, and in to replace them were a talented freshman and a junior transfer student.

And on that night, the Warriors lost.

The 67-62 defeat was the first of six losses on the season, but that five-point margin turned out to be the third widest margin in a loss during the regular season.

  • Vandals done in by 3-pointers in...

WOOD RIVER – It was a 9-0 swing that never should have happened, and it was all Roxana needed to end Vandalia’s season.

The Shells knocked down 3-pointers on three straight possessions while Vandalia rushed and missed three of the same shots in the final two minutes of the first half of last Wednesday’s regional semifinal game at East Alton-Wood River High School.

Those treys were part of a first half-ending 13-0 run that led Roxana to a 20-point halftime lead, and that margin would remain steady for the rest of the 62-42 victory.

  • Jr. Vandals have successful...

The Vandalia Jr. wrestling club had all 20 of its participating wrestlers advance to this weekend’s Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation South Sectional in Highland.

Eight wrestlers picked up first-place finishes at last Saturday’s South Regional in Carbondale, and five others took second.

As a team, the Jr. Vandals placed first in the Intermediate Division, with 113 points. Muprhysboro was second, with 94 points.

Ryan Kaiser, Dawson McKinney, Eric McKinney, Kyle Miller and Gavin Mouser earned first in that division.
