  • VFOD men's slo-pitch...

The Vandalia Field of Dreams men's slo-pitch softball league will conclude its regular season on Wednesday before hosting an All-Star Game on Aug. 4 and a championship tournament on Aug. 11-12.

With two wins on Wednesday, BCH Detailing would tie Roger Craig Welding for the regular-season championship, but if Patoka Fire Dept. beats BCH in one of the two games, RCW will be the outright champion.

  • Lack of strikeouts propels Bray...

ROBINSON – After the worst pair of games of his summer, Kyle Bray needed a break.

Going hitless for two straight games was bad enough – also striking out in each game just made it worse.

They were the last two games of the Mattoon Sr. Legion Firecracker Classic – a wooden bat tournament – at the end of June, and Bray would be leaving soon for a hockey camp.

  • Post 95 routed at Divisions

NEW BADEN – Once the Swansea/Fairview Heights Giants began to hit, it didn’t seem like it would ever stop.

And it only did because of the mercy rule.

S/FH scored 11 runs in the fourth inning and kept on scoring to beat Vandalia, 20-3, on Tuesday in the first game of the Fifth Division Tournament, sending Post 95 to its most lopsided loss of the season.

  • 'We all felt like we...

ROBINSON – For the first time ever, Vandalia reigned supreme over the East Division Sr. Legion District Tournament.

After losing its first game, Post 95 rallied to score 48 runs in four games in the loser’s bracket, capping the comeback with a 13-3 win against Olney in last Friday’s double-elimination championship game.

  • Post 95 forces double-...

ROBINSON – Quinn Wadkins had very little experience running a home run trot going into last Thursday’s District Tournament game against Olney.
And he never anticipated that would be the day he would round the bases.
Wadkins hit his first home run since pony league in the eighth inning and Austin Schwarm also homered to back a complete game from Matt Tomazzoli in a 14-2 win against Olney that forced a double-elimination championship game.

  • Vandalia eliminates T-Town; wins...

ROBINSON – For the second time this season, a Vandalia pitcher fired a nine-inning complete game.

And it’s not even a contest when determining which was the better outing.

Jacob Behrends needed 143 pitches to complete last Wednesday’s must-win game against Teutopolis in the Sr. Legion District Tournament, striking out a season-high 10 as he led Vandalia to its 30th win of the summer, an 8-4 victory.

  • Beasley homer propels Vandalia...

ROBINSON – Connor Beasley picked a pretty good time to hit his first home run of the summer.

Beasley ripped a towering home run to right last Wednesday to pull Vandalia back within a run of the lead after five innings, setting up a momentum shift that included an eight-run sixth as Post 95 picked up a must-win 13-6 victory against Robinson in the Sr. Legion District Tournament.

  • Patton traded to Texas Rangers

South Central High School graduate Spencer Patton was traded from the Kansas City Royals organization to the Texas Rangers on the same day he pitched for the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star Game.

Patton, 26, was exchanged last Wednesday for veteran reliever Jason Frasor, 36, and was assigned to the Round Rock Express, the Triple-A affiliate of the Rangers. Frasor joined the Kansas City bullpen.

  • Post 95 finishes 1-2 at Jr....

Post 95 upset the No. 2 seed at last weekend’s Jr. Legion District Tournament, but that would be its only victory as the season ended on Sunday in the loser’s bracket.

Vandalia beat Altamont, 5-2, in a first-round game last Thursday, but lost to Newton 7-4 and Dieterich 4-3 over the weekend.
