  • Odin wins Mulberry Grove Turkey...

    MULBERRY GROVE — The Odin Eagles soared to the Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament championship with solid play over the course of the five-night event.
    Odin's 67-47 win over Mulberry Grove on Saturday night secured the title for the Eagles, who went 4-1 at the tourney.
    In Saturday night's finale, Odin led, 39-23, by halftime. Mulberry Grove used a 19-8 third-quarter run to get back into the game. As the fourth-quarter began, Odin's lead was 47-42.  But the Eagles outscored the Aces, 21-5, in the final frame.

  • James powers Aces to victory

    MULBERRY GROVE — Each and every time the Mulberry Grove Aces needed a hoop, Ty James delivered.
    In a breakout performance, James erupted for 33 points in Mulberry Grove's 64-57 win over Sandoval in a first-round contest of the 2014 Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament last Monday.
    "He has the potential to do that every night," Mulberry Grove Coach Bobby Koontz said of James' big night. "He's that good."

  • Ramsey stuns Patoka in season-...

    MULBERRY GROVE — The season couldn't have started any better for the Ramsey Rams.
    The Rams stunned Patoka, 56-54, last Monday in a first round game of the 2014 Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament, surprising the field in the process with a solid season-opening victory.
    "This is the best start to a season we've had since I've been here," Ramsey Coach Rodney Hunt said. "This is a great win. Any win over Patoka is great. They've had our number for a long time. I have a lot of respect for their program. It's a good win for us."

  • Lady Bombers, Rams earn wins at...

    COWDEN — Brownstown/St. Elmo and Ramsey were among the teams competing at the Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Girls Basketball Round-Robin Thanksgiving Tournament.
    Neoga ended up the tourney champion.
    The Lady Bombers earned two wins at the tourney, beating Ramsey, 43-35, and topping North Clay, 39-37.
    BSE suffered losses to Neoga (56-28) and to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 38-33.

  • BSE girls knock off Cougars

    BROWNSTOWN — A big first-half carried the Brownstown/St. Elmo girls basketball team to 42-30 victory over South Central on Monday night.
    BSE raced out to a 28-11 lead by intermission en route to the victory.
    Sophomore post player Elissa Baron scored 12 points to lead the Lady Bombers. Kyrstyn Fitch added eight points.
    Sophomore guard Abby Hahn scored 15 points to lead the Cougars. Freshman Keely Smith added eight points off the bench.
    For South Central, a poor start was too much to overcome.

    The Vandalia Community High School wrestling team began the 2014-15 season with a dual against Belleville West on Tuesday night. Belleville West defeated a short-handed Vandalia squad, 54-18. Look for more in the print edition.

  • Web update: Vandals fall at...

    The Vandalia Community High School boys basketball team went 0-3 at the Canton Thanksgiving Tournament.

    The Vandals lost to Delavan, 58-48, on Friday night. The team returned to the tourney on Saturday. Peoria Manual defeated Vandalia, 80-27. Canton knocked off the Vandals, 60-51.

    Manual won the tourney for the fifth-straight season.

     

    Lady Vandals earn win

    Vandalia's girls basketball team finished the Litchfield Tournament on Saturday night with a 60-52 win over Mt. Olive.

  • South Central boys knock off...

    FARINA — South Central held off Vandalia's late rally and earned a 67-61 victory over the Vandals on Tuesday night in the season-opener.

    The Cougars had a 15-point lead by halftime, but the Vandals made things interesting late. Vandalia cut South Central's lead down to two points in the fourth quarter before the hosts got it done in crunch time to secure the win.

    MULBERRY GROVE — The 2014 Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament began on Monday night.

    Odin defeated Cowden-Herrick, 84-64, in the first game.

    Ramsey stunned Patoka, 56-54, in the second game.

    With a huge game from Ty James, Mulberry Grove defeated Sandoval, 64-57.

    Nokomis used a big first quarter in a 55-43 win over Vandalia in a first round game of the Litchfield Niehaus-McDonald's Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday night.

    The Lady Redskins led 19-8 after one period of play. Vandalia played nearly even the rest of the way, but could not overcome the early deficit.

    Monday win

    Vandalia's girls earned a 38-36 win over Carlinville on Monday night.
