  • Patton back in the majors

    The South Central High School graduate who made his major league debut last fall has returned to the majors.

    The Texas Rangers on Monday called up Spencer Patton from its Class AAA affiliate, Round Rock, as it sent down Roman Mendez.
    Patton, a right-hand reliever, has had a strong season at Round Rock, having an ERA of just .096 after giving up just one earned run in eight appearances.
    In those eight appearances, Patton has struck out 14 batters while walking four and giving up eight hits. Opponents’ batting average against him was .216.

  • Two more girls track records fall

    Two more school records were set as the Lady Vandals finished fourth at the South Central Conference track meet in Roxana on Tuesday.
    Emma Meyer set a new mark in the triple jump, at 33 feet 4½ inches, and Anna Miller set the school record in the 300-meter hurdles at 48.93 seconds.
    Meyer recorded three firsts for the Lady Vandals, taking the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.99 seconds and winning the pole vault with a 10-foot vault.

    Landon Feezel tossed a three-hitter as Brownstown/St. Elmo defeated Beecher City/Cowden Herrick, 12-2, on Tuesday.

  • Greenville blanks Lady Vandals...

    Greenville held Vandalia to just one hit in a five-inning contest on Monday.

  • Fourth at State Free Style

    Baelynd Brown, left, and Tanner Swain both earned fourth-place finishes at the Free Style State Championships at the University of Illinois Armory in Champaign over the weekend.

    Brown had a 1-2 record in the Intermediate 60 class, and Swain was 2-3 in the Schoolboy 120 class.

  • Bowling at State Tournament

    The five local bowlers pictured above will compete in the Illinois Pepsi State Championships May 11-12 in Addison.
