  • Vandals extend win streak to...

The Vandalia boys basketball team's formula for success revolves around two fundamental concepts - solid defense and patience on offense.

The Vandals continued to perfect that formula in conference play over the weekend, extending their win streak in South Central Conference East Division play to five games with double-digit victories over Staunton and Hillsboro.

  • Vandals win third straight SCC-...

Vandalia boys basketball coach Kevin Jackson asked his team to do three things Tuesday night in its SCC East Division contest at Pana: defend, rebound and execute on offense.

The Vandals followed through on the game plan to a T.

  • VCHS wins highlight FNB/Hosick...

A pair of VCHS wins highlighted the Third Annual First National Bank/Hosick Motors Vandalia Shootout Saturday.

Marty Johnson had 15 points and several assists in an MVP performance in the final game of the day, leading the Vandals to a 59-39 win over Hillsboro. Dylan Durr added 10 points and four steals for Vandalia, which moved to 10-10 overall and 4-2 in SCC-East play.

The Lady Vandals rolled to a 50-29 win over Pinckneyville, as Shelby Cearlock led the way with a 17-point MVP performance.

  • Lady Vandals wrap up perfect...

There's an old saying that proclaims that it's not how you start that's important - but how you finish.

That said, the Vandalia girls basketball team is feeling great heading into the postseason following its fourth-straight strong showing to close out the regular season, a 45-32 victory Monday at Staunton.

But, ironically, a key to the Lady Vandals' strong finish has been a string of outstanding starts.

  • Lady Vandals set wins record on...

Senior Night could not have been sweeter Monday for the Vandalia girls basketball team.

Not only did the Lady Vandals pick up their 23rd win of the season – breaking last year's program record – they did it against their biggest rival, beating Pana for the second time in as many weeks, 48-34.

  • Lady Vandals clinch SCC-East...

The Vandalia girls basketball team not only wrapped up its first-ever South Central Conference East Division title Monday night - the Lady Vandals got their mojo back.

After struggling offensively in wins over Pana and Hillsboro its previous two games, Vandalia scorched the nets to the tune of 58 percent shooting from the field in a 61-48 win at Litchfield.

  • Lady Vandals pick up rare...

Down by five points early in the second half and in desperate need of offense last Thursday at Pana, the Vandalia girls basketball team went to a scoring option few teams possess.

    It turned to its defense.

The result was a turnover-fueled 11-1 run that turned an 18-13 third-quarter deficit into a 24-19 Lady Vandals lead and - after some tense moments down the stretch - something that hasn't happened in quite a while.

  • Vandals game at Hillsboro...

Tuesday's postponed Vandalia boys basketball game at Hillsboro has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 16, at Hillsboro. The game was originally rescheduled for tonight (Wednesday, Jan. 28), but heavy snows wiped out VCHS's latest attempt to take on the Hiltoppers.

The Vandals' home date with Hillsboro has also been postponed twice and has been rescheduled for Feb. 7 at VCHS.

  • Vandalia Shootout on Saturday

The prep basketball season tends to get a lot like a trip to McDonald's once the conference slate begins - just the same old, same old.

That said, one might liken the Third Annual WKRV/Hosick Motors Vandalia Shootout as the hoops equivalent to a trip to the Golden Corral buffet.

For roughly nine hours Saturday at VCHS, basketball fans will get the opportunity to enjoy something different - and there will be plenty of variety.
