  • Legion season kicks off, Post 95...

Slowly, but surely, the Senior Legion team is coming together this summer.

Eight games into the season, the Post 95 squad has a record of 5-3, with most of its wins coming with depleted squad.

Patoka High School's deep run into postseason play delayed the arrival of Luke Murfin and Zach Thompson, who will both be key additions on the mound and at the plate. Add in that a couple of the big bats from Vandalia's high school team aren't playing this summer, and the Senior Legion outlook started to look bleak.

  • YMCA construction entering final...

Seven months ago, a group of representatives from the city of Vandalia gathered in an empty field off of Rock Island Avenue with shovels in hand for a ground-breaking ceremony for the new Family YMCA of Fayette County building.

In just over six weeks, the $1.25-million complex will open, as Fulk Construction puts finishing touches on the Y's new home.

From the outside, the structure looks just about complete, the inside is busy with workers hanging lights, and installing heating and air-conditioning ducts.

  • Kramer places fourth at state in...

Michael Kramer had a pretty good month of May.

Playing in several postseason baseball games for Brownstown High School, graduating from BHS, and qualifying for state in the high jump with the Brownstown-St. Elmo co-op track and field team were all memorable moments for Kramer over the past 30 days.

They were also stepping stones on his way to the awards podium in Charleston where he received the fourth-place medal in the high jump at the IHSA State Finals.

  • Patoka falls in super-sectional...

It’s been a wild couple of weeks for the Patoka High School baseball team, and Monday night’s super sectional game against Goreville was no different. For one, it started at 6 p.m. on Monday and ended shortly after noon on Tuesday. Goreville and Patoka combined for 33 runs and 25 hits, but it was Goreville who came away with the win in the slugfest, 20-13.

"We fought – that's all you can ask for. We didn't quit," Patoka head coach Joe Eddy said.

  • Patoka to face South Central in...

Patoka will play South Central on Saturday in the Albion Sectional championship at 1 p.m.

The winner plays in the Marion Supersectional on Monday at 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, Patoka defeated Dieterich 3-0 and South Central defeated Albion 7-4.

South Central beat Patoka 9-7 earlier this season.

  • BREAKING NEWS: Cowger and Kramer...

Will Cowger of Vandalia and Michael Kramer of St. Elmo co-op have qualified for the IHSA state track and field finals on Saturday.

Cowger qualified in the shot put, with a heave of 50 feet, 11 1/2 inches.

Kramer qualified in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 3 inches.

Vandalia's Angel Osorio also competed in the high jump, but could not clear the 6 feet, 3 inch cutline.

Cowger and Kramer will both compete on Saturday at 10 a.m. in Charleston.

  • Osorio returning to state meet,...

For the second straight year, Vandalia qualified athletes for the boys IHSA Track and Field State Finals.

Angel Osorio is returning to state for the second consecutive year, after placing second in the high jump at the Robinson Sectional on Friday, with a jump of 6 feet, 5 inches.

Osorio nearly qualified for state in the 400-meter dash, placing third with a time of 52.90 seconds

Last season at state, Osorio had to compete with the rain as well as other athletes. The weather hindered his performance placing him in a tie for 18th at 6 feet.

  • SC wins fifth straight regional...

No area school has had the amount of success that the South Central baseball team has experienced during coach Curt Jones' tenure.

With 10 regional championships, two professional baseball players, countless college players through the years and a steady follow of talent and 20-win seasons, South Central's program continues to thrive.

Saturday's 14-6 thrashing of North Clay added another chapter to the Cougars' history, as South Central got its 22nd win of the season and its fifth straight regional crown.

  • T-Town ends Vandals' season...

T-Town continues to have Vandalia's number, beating the Vandals 11-0 on Wednesday, ending their season in the regional semifinal for the second straight season.

"T-Town has had a good program for a very long time, and we're trying to turn our program around. It's only a matter of time before things turn and we take care of business, just like they did today," Vandalia coach Luke Hohlt said.
