    The reminders were everywhere.

    They litterally surrounded the Vandalia girls basketball team Thursday night in the form of countless championship banners at Teutopolis' J.H. Griffin Gymnasium.

    The message was clear: T-Town does not lose regionals.

    The evidence was undeniable. In their 31-year history, the Lady Shoes had collected 27 regional-title plaques - including 17 in a row.

    For the Vandalia wrestling program, it's not only been a source of pride during what many felt would be a rebuilding year - it's been a motivating factor as well.

    "They know our tradition," Vandals coach Jason Clay said of his team. "You've got some of those young kids that grew up watching it in the kids' club. They don't want to let anything slip.

     The Vandalia boys basketball team's formula for success revolves around two fundamental concepts - solid defense and patience on offense.

    The Vandals continued to perfect that formula in conference play over the weekend, extending their win streak in South Central Conference East Division play to five games with double-digit victories over Staunton and Hillsboro.

    A pair of VCHS wins highlighted the Third Annual First National Bank/Hosick Motors Vandalia Shootout Saturday.

    Marty Johnson had 15 points and several assists in an MVP performance in the final game of the day, leading the Vandals to a 59-39 win over Hillsboro. Dylan Durr added 10 points and four steals for Vandalia, which moved to 10-10 overall and 4-2 in SCC-East play. 

    The Lady Vandals rolled to a 50-29 win over Pinckneyville, as Shelby Cearlock led the way with a 17-point MVP performance.

     There's an old saying that proclaims that it's not how you start that's important - but how you finish.

    That said, the Vandalia girls basketball team is feeling great heading into the postseason following its fourth-straight strong showing to close out the regular season, a 45-32 victory Monday at Staunton.

    But, ironically, a key to the Lady Vandals' strong finish has been a string of outstanding starts.

    Senior Night could not have been sweeter Monday for the Vandalia girls basketball team.

    Not only did the Lady Vandals pick up their 23rd win of the season – breaking last year's program record – they did it against their biggest rival, beating Pana for the second time in as many weeks, 48-34.

     The Vandalia girls basketball team not only wrapped up its first-ever South Central Conference East Division title Monday night - the Lady Vandals got their mojo back.

    After struggling offensively in wins over Pana and Hillsboro its previous two games, Vandalia scorched the nets to the tune of 58 percent shooting from the field in a 61-48 win at Litchfield.
