Stacy White has nearly reached her goal of raising $750 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and earning a spot in the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 13.

The Foundation helps children who are diagnosed with cancer, and is named for Alexandria Scott, a 4-year-old who was diagnosed with cancer when she was 1.

  • Officials don't allow...

The Vandalia boys track season ended with a tough break at Saturday’s state finals.

Coming into the 110-meter hurdle finals as the No. 4 seed, senior Ryan Ambuehl did not make it to the check-in tent in time to run in the finals, even though he reported before the race actually began.

  • PHOTO: Whightsil signs with IC

Vandalia senior Morgan Whightsil last Thursday signed a letter of intent to play softball for Illinois College.

Whightsil played in 114 of a possible 116 games during her high school career with the Lady Vandals.

  • Schroeder ends coaching career...

EAST PEORIA – Pacing in the last row of seats at the EastSide Centre, coach Kevin Schroeder nervously watched as the final athlete he would ever coach was working toward winning a second state championship.

Eighth-grader Curtis Gordon cleared 12 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault on May 18 to win the state title and allow Schroeder to close his 33-year coaching career with a back-to-back state champ.

  • Cougars defeated in sectional...

GREENUP – Four years ago, there was a big freshman class that took the field at Lions Field in Kinmundy.

Many of those 15 athletes still remained with the Cougars on Saturday when South Central took the field for the sectional championship game, and that’s not exactly the position coach Curt Jones thought the team would be in when he first met the group.

  • Big hits lead to semifinal win...

GREENUP – Now that South Central is back to playing Class 1A schools, the Cougars are showing that they mean business.

Two home runs led a 16-hit barrage against North Clay in last Wednesday’s 11-3 sectional semifinal victory.

“We’re going back to small-school baseball,” said senior Fischer Tharp, who went 2-for-4 in the game. “We’ve played 2A and 3A schools all year, and when we get here, the pitching and hitting is nothing like what we’ve been seeing.

  • Cougars outfielders show off...

GREENUP – His coach called it unbelievable.

A long-time teammate said there must have been a trampoline in the outfield.

His acrobatics left part of the crowd stunned and part of the crowd in a frenzy over one of the finest catches a person will see at the high school level.

It was a good day to be South Central senior Austin Schwarm last Wednesday, as he made a leaping catch in left field to rob a two-run double, and also homered as part of a 16-hit barrage that gave the Cougars an 11-3 win against North Clay in the sectional semifinals.

  • Riley betters time at state...

As the only freshman in the 200-meter dash state preliminaries, South Central’s Chase Riley was facing tough odds as he competed against athletes who are closer to being men than boys.

With the slowest qualifying time, Riley had little chance to make the event finals, but he was able to run a faster time than he did at sectionals and better his seed last Thursday.

Running for the Patoka/South Central co-op, Riley ran the race in 23.87 seconds to finish 29th out of 31 runners on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
