  • Mulberry Grove wins first...

The Mulberry Grove High School volleyball team won its first match since Oct. 21, 2008, last Wednesday when it defeated Mt. Olive in straight sets, 25-21, 25-21.

Mulberry Grove did win a match against Mid-America Prep School last season, but since that was MAPS’ first year in existence, coaches point to the 2008 Egyptian-Illini Conference Tournament match as the last significant win.

Coach Natalie Lappe said on Sept. 16 that her young team was close to winning this season.

  • The College Report: Recovered...

Vandalia grad Brock Doehring has definitely had his ups and downs as a football player.
Saturday, Sept. 18, was definitely one of the good moments.

Illinois College defeated Lake Forest College 27-7, as Doehring scored a touchdown. The IC starting tight end caught one pass for 3 yards to score IC's first points of the contest. The 3-yard pass closed an 11-play, 52-yard drive in 4:20. He entered the end zone with the Mitch Niekamp pass with 10:40 to play in the first quarter. It was his only catch of the contest.

  • Jump for Joel Marathon raises...

The second annual Jump for Joel Marathon was held Saturday in St. Elmo, with 46 participants either running, walking or biking all or part of the marathon to raise $6,447.

A spaghetti dinner was held the night before at the First Church of God in St. Elmo. That event brought in $1,000, bringing the total amount raised to $7,447.

The money generated by the two events will be used to provide two meals a week for the next 12 months to children in the Kabiria slum in Kenya, Africa.

  • Ramsey baseball is building for...

ST ELMO – With the season coming to a close on Thursday, the Ramsey High School baseball team has plenty to look forward to and plenty to put behind them.

After graduating six seniors last season, Rams coach Mark Rinehart knew the fall season would be a long one, but his team has given him reason to believe in the future.

“We’re young,” he said. “Hopefully, in a couple years they will have some experience, and we can put together a solid nucleus.”

  • Two of EIC's best battle

ST. ELMO – The schedule read St. Elmo vs. Patoka, but had there been a marquee for Monday’s volleyball match, it would have read Megan Durbin vs. Paige Myers.

Durbin and Myers, both seniors, are two of the strongest hitters in the Egyptian Illini Conference, and both coaches prepared accordingly.

“We tried to get a block up (against Durbin),” Patoka coach Nicole Brubaker said. “We got a few of them, but not enough to pull it off.”

  • St. Elmo falls to Beecher for...

After stroking at least 10 hits in the first two games of the Egyptian-Illini Conference Tournament, St. Elmo’s bats were shut down by top-seeded Beecher City’s Austin Miley during a 15-5 loss in the championship game last Thursday.

Miley struck out eight Eagles in a six-inning, complete game effort, allowing only Ben Sperry, Connor Beasley and Woodsen Savage a total of four singles in the game.

  • Rushing attack gives Vandalia...

Two weeks ago, the Vandalia football team started well, scoring two quick touchdowns against Roxana, but then was blanked the rest of the game as the Shells scored 32 unanswered points.

On Friday, the Vandals made sure that didn’t happen again. They hit hard early, put the pedal to the metal and never let up.
