  • Paige Myers' work not yet...

    PATOKA – Her vicious spikes draw cheers from the crowd – even during warm-ups.

    Her jump serve can swing a game’s momentum into her team’s favor in less than a minute.

    Her skills are being pursued by several colleges.

    But at the end of the day, “I don’t consider myself to be better than anybody else,” said senior Paige Myers, the unselfish superstar of Patoka High School’s volleyball team.

  • Herker advances to state golf...

    Junior Derrick Herker will represent the Vandalia High School golf team at the state tournament in Bloomington on Friday and Saturday.

    “It’s kind of like a dream,” Herker said.

    Herker advanced to the tournament after shooting a 76 in his sectional round at Crab Orchard Golf Course in Carterville.

    Because there were seven individuals who shot 76s, but only six spots available for the state tournament, Herker had to earn his spot on playoff holes, which he did by shooting par on the second.

  • Vandals fall just short at...

    PIASA – Trailing 24-7 and having lost a fumble on the first play of the fourth quarter, nothing was looking promising for the Vandalia football team last Friday night against Southwestern.

    But then the magic began.

    The defense forced Southwestern to punt for the first time since the first quarter four plays after that fumble.

    The offense then made a fierce comeback, scoring three times in six minutes to take a 27-24 lead.

  • Vandals nearly top Southwestern

    The Vandalia High School football team stromed back from a 24-7 deficit to take a 27-24 lead in the fourth quarter, but a late touchdown by Southwestern gave the Birds a 31-27 win.

    Bryan Hosick and Levi Ulmer each had two touchdowns for the Vandals.

  • Soccer team to play Friday

    Vandalia High School has scheduled a soccer game against Altamont to be played Friday at 3 p.m. at the VHS soccer field.

    The Vandals had to cancel their game with Lincolnwood on Tuesday after the referees failed to show up.

    Vandalia plays its regional match at Mt. Carmel next Tuesday.

  • Ramsey plays at Pana Tournament

    Ramsey's Morgan Miller attempts a block against the Taylorville JV team at the Pana Tournament on Saturday. At the tournament, Ramsey defeated Sullivan (25-17, 25-12) but fell to Pana (25-9, 25-20), Argenta (25-19, 25-10) and the Taylorville JV team (21-25, 25-19, 17-25).

  • St. Elmo falls in MTC Tournament

    Tenth-seeded St. Elmo was eliminated from the National Trail Conference fall baseball tournament on Friday, falling to Dieterich, 12-2.

    Woodsen Savage had two singles and drove in both of St. Elmo's runs in the top of the first. Connor Beasley took the loss.

    St. Elmo was 8-13 for the season.

  • Vandalia JV football beats...

    The JV football team defeated Hillsboro, 26-18, on Monday night.

    After a scoreless first quarter,  the Vandals got a 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Wade Cowger, who took over for the team after Tim Ritchey broke his arm in the varsity game against Litchfield.

    After missing the extra point, Vandalia went for and converted a 2-point conversion after Ryan Ambuehl scored a touchdown to give the Vandals a 14-0 halftime lead.
