  • Vandals set new 3,200-meter...

    The 4X800-meter relay team of sophomore Wade Cowger, sophomore Ryan Ambuehl, junior Quenten Austin and senior Daniel Bell set a new school record last Thursday during a meet at Hillsboro.

    The quartet ran the race in 8:52.34 (fully-automatic timing) to best the old record by more than 10 seconds.

    The old mark was set in 2009 by Drew Bell, Daniel Bell, Quinn Phillips and Andy Koonce. Their time was 9:03.54 (FAT converted).

  • Vandals end season showing...

    The Vandalia baseball team had a brief winning streak halted last Thursday, but coach Luke Hohlt said the game was still a step forward, because the Vandals fought to the finish.

    Knowing that game was one of the last before the regional tournament, Hohlt knew Vandalia would need to continue showing that resilience to pull off an upset at regionals.

    The Vandals, however, would lose their season finale to Hillsboro on Friday, before dropping a first-round regional game to Litchfield, 3-1, on Monday to end the season.

  • Patoka ends first HS girls track...

    ROBINSON – Patoka High School closed its first season of girls track without a state qualifier last Friday at the Robinson sectional.

    Senior Paige Myers had the Lady Warriors' only top-10 finish after leaping 4 feet, 8 inches to place ninth in high jump.

    Patoka's 4X200-meter relay team of Arizona Berning, Myers, Latosha Carbaugh and Brandi Isaak placed ninth, with a time of 2:03.43, and the 4X100-meter relay team of Berning, Myers, Karlie Nettier and Carbaugh, finished 10th, with a time of 0:58.67.

  • Several area teams win regional...

    Four area teams on Monday won first-round games of regional tournaments, and two teams lost.

    Senior Brooke Maxey had two of the third-seeded Lady Eagles' three hits, drove in the game-winning run and also tagged out two runners at home during a 2-1 St. Elmo win against No. 6 Neoga.

    Maxey led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, stole second and third base, and scored on a passed ball to give St. Elmo a 1-0 lead.

  • Sports Briefs (May 19)

    Bone has best finish for BJHS at state

    A 10th-place finish in the seventh-grade 400-meter dash was the highest any Brownstown Junior High track member finished at the Illinois Elementary Association Class A state meet in Peoria this past weekend.

    Bone finished that race in 1:05.62, and participated in three other events.

    In the 100-meter dash, she finished 38th, with a time of 0:14.69, and in the high jump, she placed 24th, with a jump of 4 feet, 2 inches.

  • Patoka Junior High State...

    Patoka Junior High School sent 10 athletes to the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletic Association state meet this past weekend.

    The athletes are pictured. In the front row, from left, are: Amber Gramlick, Taylor Isaak, Cateline Gaston and Joey Sturgeon. In the back are: Ashley Gramlick, Shane Cain, Chandler Murfin, Jered Cain, Garrett Belcher and Lindsey Cain. Isaak placed fifth in the 100-meter dash and fourth in the 200-meter dash, and Ashley Gramlick placed seventh in discus. The other athletes were on relays teams.

  • Myers Earns EIC Scholarship

    Patoka senior Paige Myers (right) was the female winner of the $250 Egyptian-Illini Conference athletic scholarship.

    She is seen with the male winner, Alex Turner, of Cowden-Herrick. To be eligible, the athlete must have completed a combined four varsity seasons in their junior and senior years, while also maintaining a grade-point average of at least 3.3.
