    The Illinois High School Association implemented a new policy outlining return to play guidelines for student-athletes who have been diagnosed with a concussion.

    The new policy reads: “In cases when an athlete is not cleared to return to play the same day as he/she is removed from a contest following a possible head injury (i.e., concussion), the athlete shall not return to play or practice until the athlete is evaluated by and receives written clearance from a licensed health care provider to return to play.

  • Johnson picks IC

    Vandalia senior Marty Johnson has decided to continue his academic and basketball careers at Illinois College.

    Johnson, a two-time team Most Valuable Player and a three-time all-conference player, scored more than 1,000 points in his career with the Vandals.

    He plans to study accounting at IC.

  • Senior Spotlight: Courtney Gordon

    As a senior, Courtney Gordon understands that taking on a leadership role is an unwritten rule of her membership with the Vandalia High School girls track team.

    Therefore, it’s a good thing, as she puts it, that, “I like being in charge.”

    And she has certainly taken charge to lead by example.

    Gordon has been a staple in four events this season, regularly placing in the long jump, 100-meter dash and 300-meter hurdles, while also running a leg on a successful 4X100-meter relay team.

    Based on the final score of Monday’s baseball game between South Central and Vandalia, one would never imagine it was a pitching duel.

    South Central may have won 8-1, but Cougar senior Derek Harmeier and Vandal senior Matt Hoffman both had their best outings of the season.

    Logging a combined 23 strikeouts, the two pitchers drew high praise from both coaches.
