  • Vandalia outlasts South Central...

SALEM – The suicide squeeze is one of the most exciting plays in baseball.

It's also one of the most dangerous.

Nonetheless, Vandalia coach TK Kinkead drew up the play for Nick Metzger as the clock approached 11 p.m. last Friday night in the second-round of the Jr. Legion District Tournament.

Metzger squared, placed a perfect bunt and Leyton Godoyo scored to give Post 95 a slim 4-3 lead in the 11th inning against South Central.

  • Post 95 upsets Salem in opener

SALEM – The hearts of the players on Vandalia’s Jr. Legion team and its fans collectively dropped as a flaring, would-be game-tying blooper began to drop into right field last Thursday.

    Well, everyone’s except Matt Campbell’s.

His sliding catch for the second out in the bottom of the seventh inning saved a run and pumped life back into Vandalia’s squad after a leadoff triple gave Salem some momentum before Post 95 closed out a 2-1 victory in the first-round of the District Tournament.

  • South Central ousted by Altamont...

SALEM – South Central had trouble hitting the ball against Altamont on Saturday, scoring just once as it bowed out of the Jr. Legion District Tournament with a 6-1 loss.

Post 519 had seven hits – four singles and three doubles – but it only had three multi-hit innings, stringing together doubles from Larry Schoreck and Seven Wright in the sixth to get on the board.

South Central had also struggled to hit during an 11-inning game against Vandalia the night before in the winner’s bracket quarterfinal.

  • Field of Dreams discusses...

Field maintenance was the primary topic of discussion at Tuesday night's Field of Dreams meeting.

No specific deadlines or motions were made involving maintenance, but the committee discussed a number of areas to be improved.

At the high school baseball diamond, committee members have found that there is grass growing on the outer edge of the infield and that there are too many weeds growing in the outfield warning track. In addition, weeds are growing on the side tracks down the right- and left-field lines.
