    DECATUR - Battling excessive heat and the top seed, the Lady Vandals still came out on top.

    After falling to Warrensburg-Latham in the first game of the double-elimination tournament in a Decatur league for high schools on Saturday in 100-degree heat, the Lady Vandals stormed back in an offensive show the second game to win the league championship, 15-13.

    The Vandalia High School softball team will play for the Decatur league championship on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Lady Vandals will play on a field on Division St. about a mile from MacArthur High School.

  • Vandalia softball to play in...

    The Vandalia High School softball team is nearing completion of its summer season and will face the "No Names" in the championship semifinal of the Decatur summer league tournament on Friday at 6 p.m.

    Whichever team wins will play for the title on Saturday at 2 p.m., and the loser plays at noon.

    So far in the tournament, the Lady Vandals have beaten MacArthur, 13-11, and Taylorville, 24-3.

    Friday's races at Fayette County Speedway have been canceled due to excessive heat. The Speedway will reschedule for the event for sometime in August.

    The next scheduled racing is on Aug. 5.

  • 19-year-old Jr. Legion coach...

    SALEM – TK Kinkead isn’t sure if he will coach the Vandalia Jr. Legion team next summer.

    The 19-year-old Collinsville resident and former Vandalia player said that being a college student and driving to games only to have them rained out, at times, made coaching difficult this season. But after guiding Post 95 through an improbable run to the semifinals of the District Tournament this past weekend, he may just get the coaching itch next June.

    SALEM – It was an unexpected ride for the Vandalia Jr. Legion squad, but it was one the players will always remember.

    Seeded last among East Division teams after winning just six regular-season games, Post 95 upset Salem and South Central in dramatic fashion last Thursday and Friday, before being relegated to the loser’s bracket after losing a lead to Teutopolis in the semifinals of the District Tournament on Saturday.

    SALEM – With one more out, Vandalia was going to be relegated to the loser’s bracket.

    But Johnnie Clift had another idea.

    His three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning put Vandalia ahead, 10-8, during the semifinal game of the Jr. Legion District Tournament on Saturday night. But with the help of a couple controversial umpiring decisions and a handful of Vandalia errors, top-seeded Teutopolis stormed back in the bottom half to win, 11-10.
