  • Lady Vandals pick up rare...

    Down by five points early in the second half and in desperate need of offense last Thursday at Pana, the Vandalia girls basketball team went to a scoring option few teams possess.

    It turned to its defense.

    The result was a turnover-fueled 11-1 run that turned an 18-13 third-quarter deficit into a 24-19 Lady Vandals lead and - after some tense moments down the stretch - something that hasn't happened in quite a while.

  • Vandals game at Hillsboro...

    Tuesday's postponed Vandalia boys basketball game at Hillsboro has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 16, at Hillsboro. The game was originally rescheduled for tonight (Wednesday, Jan. 28), but heavy snows wiped out VCHS's latest attempt to take on the Hiltoppers.

    The Vandals' home date with Hillsboro has also been postponed twice and has been rescheduled for Feb. 7 at VCHS.

  • Vandalia Shootout on Saturday

    The prep basketball season tends to get a lot like a trip to McDonald's once the conference slate begins - just the same old, same old.

    That said, one might liken the Third Annual WKRV/Hosick Motors Vandalia Shootout as the hoops equivalent to a trip to the Golden Corral buffet.

    For roughly nine hours Saturday at VCHS, basketball fans will get the opportunity to enjoy something different - and there will be plenty of variety.

    Saturday night was no exception, as the Lady Vandals hoisted the Sandoval Tournament championship plaque for the second straight season, thanks in large part to another overwhelmed adversary's inability to score.

  • Wrestling team gets big win over...

    Emotion can carry a team a long way. On Saturday, it carried the Vandalia wrestling team to perhaps its biggest victory of the year.

    Pumped up by a big home crowd and the presence of a highly regarded visiting team, the Vandals (17-2) finished off a quadrangular sweep in thrilling fashion, as Anthony Coney's pin in the 130-pound match clinched a 37-36 victory over state-ranked Murphysboro.

  • Comets hold off Vandals down the...

    January 16 was a date the Vandalia boys basketball team had circled on the calendar for weeks.

    Now, Feb. 6 is a day that cannot come soon enough.

    That's the date the IHSA will release postseason pairings. And you can rest assured, the Vandals are practically salavating at the possibility that another shot at archrival Greenville could await them when the Pana Regional pairings are revealed in a couple weeks.

     To most people, it was simply the day after Thanksgiving.

    To McKendree University men's basketball fans, it is the last time they lost a basketball game.

    On Nov. 29, the Bearcats started a winning streak, which, with a win over Columbia College on Jan. 20, has been extended to nine games.

  • Lady Vandals advance to title...

    The Vandalia girls basketball team will get a chance to defend its Sandoval Tournament title Saturday night thanks to a 40-26 semifinal victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City on Thursday.

    Defense and rebounding keyed the Lady Vandals' latest victory, as they held a 28-16 advantage on the boards and forced the Lady Hornets into 26 turnovers.

    Laura Hobbie led the way in the first half, scoring all 10 of her points, as VCHS enjoyed a 19-10 lead at intermission.

  • Lady Vandals move to 17-1

    The Vandalia girls basketball team took three steps toward attaining two major goals over the past seven days, moving its record to 17-1 in the process.

    The sixth-ranked Class 2A team in the state finds itself in the driver's seat in the race to win the program's first-ever South Central Conference East Division title after moving to 5-0 in league play with wins over Staunton and Greenville last week.
