  • Vandalia Sr. Legion ends season...

SALEM – Before the bottom of the sixth inning at the Sr. Legion District Tournament on Saturday, Vandalia’s players stood outside the dugout and tossed their bats onto the field.

Done to “wake up” the bats because Post 95 was struggling offensively while clinging to a 2-1 lead, Vandalia would go on to score once in the sixth, twice in the seventh and thrice in the eighth to walk away from the first-round game with an 8-1 win against Bridgeport.

  • Post 95 falls in final game;...

With the Jr. Legion District Tournament set to begin on Thursday, it was good to see that Vandalia’s squad did not give up during its final regular season game on Monday.

Unfortunately, the offense didn’t start clicking until after it had fallen behind by 13 runs and needed to score to make the game last more than five innings.

After the eventual 17-9 loss to Effingham, however, coach TK Kinkead said he believes that fighting spirit will serve his team well in Salem over the next several days.

  • Crafty pitching gives Jr. Legion...

The Vandalia Jr. Legion club started last Friday’s game with a soft-tossing lefty.

It closed the game with a lanky, hard-throwing righty, and the contrasting styles had Salem fooled during an 8-5 win for Post 95.

“That was our plan at the beginning of the game,” said TK Kinkead of his pitching strategy. “After the rough first inning, Matt (Campbell) really settled down, and I kept on letting him go until Salem caught up to him.”

  • Vandalia Jr. Legion loses to...

The Fourth of July was on Monday, but the Vandalia and Trenton Jr. Legion baseball teams waited until Tuesday to set off their fireworks.

Twenty-six runs were scored, coaches and umpires traded words several times and one assistant coach was ejected during a 19-7 Trenton win in the first game of a doubleheader.

  • SC pitchers record 12 K's...

KINMUNDY – Two pitchers combined to strike out 12 Trenton hitters, and each South Central player reached base at least once during an 8-2 win in the first game of a doubleheader last Saturday.

Shawn Meyer started for Post 519 and struck out 11 before being replaced on the mound after 6 1/3 innings of work. Luke Krajefska finished out the game, inducing a fielder's choice and striking out the final batter.
