  • Whightsil to continue football...

    Versatility has been Mitch Whightsil's forté during his time at Vandalia Community High School.

    In addition to being an honor roll student, the senior has found time to excel in football and baseball and as the unofficial leader of Code Red - VCHS's raucous student section (Whightsil was the guy in the Super Man costume... or, on special  occasions, a cheerleader's uniform).

  • Bombers stun Greenville

     Some probably questioned Brownstown's sanity for scheduling Greenville this spring - a school nearly four times its size with a baseball program that is considered one of the best in the state.

    And it probably seemed even less sane that the Bombers were bound and determined to get in Monday's game with the powerhouse Comets, minus injured standouts Jared Winters and Michael Kramer.

  • Vandals roll to first win of year

     After getting outscored 25-2 in its first two games of the 2009 season, the Vandalia baseball team enjoyed being on the left side of a lopsided final score Friday in an 11-1 win over visiting Ramsey.

    And the key to the Vandals' first victory of the season being an easy one was their ability to take advantage of opportunities - along with the Rams' inability to do so.

  • McNary Hired As New VCHS Girls...

     A familiar face will be taking over the Vandalia Community High School girls basketball program.

    A little more than three weeks after longtime Lady Vandals coach Mike Butler announced his retirement, VCHS Hall of Famer Michelle (Kaiser) McNary was hired as the sixth coach in VCHS girls basketball history at Tuesday's Vandalia School Board Meeting.

    She will also take over the open physical education teacher position at the school.

  • Vandals fall to Rockridge in...

     Even at full strength, the Vandalia baseball team figured to have its work cut out for it Friday in its season-opener against Rockridge, which made a four-plus hour trek south from Taylor Ridge to play the Vandals.

    So it obviously didn't help that three of Vandalia's five returning starters were unavailable against the Rockets.

  • VCHS Boys Track Starts Season...

     The Vandalia boys track team kicked off the 2009 season in excellent fashion Saturday by placing 15th out of 42 teams with 13 points at the Charleston Boys Indoor Invitational Classic at Eastern Illinois University's Lantz Fieldhouse.

    Senior Drew Bell led the way, breaking his own school record in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:31.44, good for second place in a loaded field.

  • Leader-Union Boys Basketball...

     One of the top students in his class, South Central senior Isaac Grapperhaus has always been good with numbers.

    That said, the 6-foot-5 center knew that although his statistics from his junior season were good - 14.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game - they needed to be better during his senior year, as the Cougars were losing four varsity regulars, including team MVP Will Crain.

  • Mahon throws no-hitter for KC

     St. Elmo grad Logan Mahon has yet to taste defeat on the pitching mound at the college level.

    The Kaskaskia College sophomore hurler has had close calls before, but in 11 decisions, which include eight from one year ago, he has not had to put any number besides "0" in the right hand column. But even Mahon can improve.

  • Bauer Steps Down As Boys Hoops...

     Ryan Bauer tendered his letter of resignation as Mulberry Grove High School boys basketball coach and athletic director Monday night so that he can concentrate on his new duties as MGHS principal.

    "With the time it takes to coach basketball anymore, it's just better for myself, the district and my family as well," said Bauer, an MGHS alum who enjoyed a three-year stint as the head coach at his alma mater.

  • Leader-Union Boys Basketball...

    It wasn't the mere fact that the South Central boys basketball team was losing at the start of the 2008-09 season that seemed cause for concern.

    It was how the Cougars were losing and who they were losing to - and the unfortunate timing of it all - that proved most disturbing for South Central fans.

    It all started with the program's first-ever defeat at the hands of Odin. Then there was a nine-point loss to an extremely young Flora team.
