    A year ago, the Vandalia girl’s track and field team was returning to Vandalia as state champs in the 4-by-400-meter relay. This weekend they will attempt to repeat as state champions.

    For the second straight year, the girls 4x400 team qualified for state. The squad posted a first-place finish at last weekend’s sectionals, with a time of 4:07.976.

    Although the team is returning to state, the parts won’t be the same as last year. Paige Dodson, Kayla Houston and Ashley Durbin are all back. Missing is Kristen Stunkel. In her place will be Tori Hagy.

  • Vandals upset Shelbyville in...

    In the opening round of the baseball regional on Monday Vandalia pulled off a shocking upset of Shelbyville.

    “I just really proud of the boys the way they came out from the first pitch today and went from the first inning to the seventh inning,” head coach Luke Hohlt said. “That’s how you’ve got to play this game.”

    The Vandals pitching and hitting was both on point in the 16-5 win over the Rams. Freshman pitcher Ian Murrell earned the win.

  • VJHS thinclads heading to state

    Four days after winning their second consecutive conference championship, the Vandalia Junior High School boys track team advanced to state by winning a sectional championship.

    The VJHS squad won the 13-team Springfield sectional on Saturday with 80 points, three more than Chatham.

    Those qualifying for the state tournament included sectional champions Blake Swofford and Ryan Ambuel. Swofford won the long jump title at 18 feet, 11 inches, and Ambuel won the 110-hurdles with a time of 16.4 seconds.

  • Boys place second at conference...

    The Vandalia boys track and field team scored 38 points and placed sixth out of 12 teams at the South Central Conference meet Tuesday night at Pana.

    The host Panthers won the conference title with 108 points, outdistancing runner-up Piasa Southwestern with 104 and third-place Litchfield with 98. Finishing just in front of the Vandals were Staunton with 46 and Carlinville with 40.

    The Vandals were led by a pair of second-place finishes by Angel Osorio in the high jump and Drew Bell in the 1,600-meter run, and Will Cowger placed third in the shot put.

  • Three track records set at...

    The Vandalia boys track team set three school records on the way to a narrow second-place finish in a five-team meet at Greenville last Thursday.

    The Vandals scored 94 1/2 points, only three points behind Breese Mater Dei, which won the meet with 97 1/2. Greenville finished third with 85 points, followed by Metro East Lutheran with 73 and Christ Our Rock Lutheran with one point.

    Drew Bell broke his own 3200-meter record, running a 10:01 – cutting eight seconds off his previous record of 10:09.92.

  • Cearlock signs with Stephens...

    Vandalia Community High School senior Shelby Cearlock signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., on Tuesday. Shown, from left, are Stephens head coach, Dane Pavlovich; Cearlock and her parents, Randy and Tracy Cearlock; and VCHS Athletics Director Mike Butler. Cearlock was the member of a VCHS girls squad that set a new single-season wins record, won the South Central Conference East Division for the first time, advanced to the Sweet Sixteen and finished with a 28-2 record.

  • Open house for VCHS state champs...

    Vandalia Community High School athletes who have earned individual state championships will be honored at an open house in the high school gymnasium next Tuesday, May 12.

    Those individuals, plus the girls state champion 4x400-meter relay team, recently have had their pictures placed on the west wall of the gymnasium to recognize their achievements.

  • Boys place second at Pana,...

    The Vandalia High School boys track team last Thursday finished second in a quadrangular meet at Pana.

    The host Panthers won the meet with a score of 66.5 points, followed by Vandalia with 52, Greenville with 38.5 and Gillespie with 15.

    A new school record of 1:39.2 was set by Vandalia’s 4x200-meter relay team of Andy Koonce, Angel Osorio, Michael Galletto and Mitch Whightsil. The old record was 1:40.7.

    Due to wet conditions, no field events were contested.

  • Relay team sets new school...

    The Vandalia High School girls track team set a school record for the third time this season in the 4x800-meter relay on their way to capturing first-place in that event in Tuesday night’s South Central Conference meet at Litchfield.

    The relay team of Ashley Durbin, Kayla Houston, Paige Dodson and Tori Hagy recorded a time of 10:29.5 – which was about six seconds over the state meet qualifying time.
