    Greenville Running Club

    For any athlete in grades K-12 in the Greenville area.

    Sign up and first practice is Wed, June 10 at the Greenville College track. Practices are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:00-4:00 p.m. through July 24 at the Greenville High School track after the first week when it will be at the college track.

    Athletes will compete in their age group competing in USTF and AAU events. Cost is $60 which will pay for entry fees and other expenses.

  • Bell places 6th at state; first...

    For the first time since 1933, a male Vandalia Community High School runner has placed in the Class A State Track and Field Meet. Over the years, several Vandals have placed in field events, and the girls 4 by 400-meter relay team won state titles last year and this year.

  • South Central falls in Super...

    The Cougars' run to state came to a halt Monday night as South Central fell to Marissa High School in the Supersectional in Marion.

    “We always wanted to play in June,” South Central coach Kurt Jones said. “Of course, June is usually the state finals.”

    South Central’s ace, Tanner Bushue, got the call on just two days' rest, and he was not himself.

    Jones did not make his final decision to start Bushue until Monday. His fastball reached 90 only a few times, and his curve ball was not sharp.

    The Freight is back for one final go-round.

    The two-time ASA National Champion Vandalia Guaranteed Air Freight fastpitch softball team is returning for is its final season.

    Just two seasons removed from its last national championship, in 2007, the Freight will play its final season this summer.

    Three Vandalia High School track and field athletes and one St. Elmo High School athlete competed in the preliminary round of the Class A State Meet on Thursday at Charleston, with two advancing to the finals on Saturday.

    It was, as they say, déjà vu all over again.

    The defending state champion Vandalia Community High School girls 4-by-400-meter relay team was in the runner-up position to Eureka after Thursday’s preliminary heats. Just like last year.

    They drew the same lane assignment in the finals – lane 8, next to the outside. Just like last year.

    And they ran an electrifying race – leading virtually pole to pole in the four-lap race. Just like last year.

  • T-Town blanks Vandals 13-0

    Three days after winning the first game of its regional tournament, Vandalia exited the tourney in the semifinal round against Teutopolis.

    Teutopolis, the No. 1 seed in the region, showed its depth and talent in the 13-0 win.

    “They [Teutopolis] know how to play game,” Coach Luke Hohlt said, “We just have to come out and be ready from the get go, and a few at-bats here and there may have changed the outcome of this game. We had some chances there, could have made the pitcher work a little harder, but that’s a learning experience.”

  • Ruffner takes third in high jump...

    Going up to Peoria for the IESA Class AA State track and Field meet, VJHS coach Kevin Schroeder and his Junior Vandals had just one goal, win a medal.

    Competing in just nine of the 57 events, against the best seventh-graders and eighth-graders in the state, their goal would not be an easy one.

    Sierah Ruffner, however, rose to the occasion.

    Ruffner, an eighth grader, competed in the eighth-grade girls’ high jump. Despite the event start time of noon, she had to wait until 2 p.m. before her first jump, in the third flight.

    The defending state champion girl’s 4-by-400-meter relay from Vandalia Community High School was runner-up to Eureka in Thursday’s preliminary heat, but still qualified for Saturday’s final on the basis of time.

  • Lady Vandals end season with...

    The Lady Vandals softball season ended on a low note as they fell to Carlyle 12-2 Monday afternoon in the first round of the regionals.

    Carlyle was in control from the first pitch. Its defense and pitching kept Vandalia off the scoreboard until the fifth inning.
