  • Mahon has allowed no earned runs...

    St. Elmo High School graduate Logan Mahon has pitched well in three appearances out of the bullpen for the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League.

    The Grizzlies are based in Sauget.

    Mahon pitched two innings against Joliet during an 8-4 win on May 20. He allowed two hits and a walk.

    Two days later, he struck out two batters in one inning of work during a 1-0 loss at Washington.

    He also walked one batter.

    Last Thursday, Mahon took the loss after pitching one inning of a 4-3 loss to Washington.

  • Sport Fishing and Conservation...

    The Vandalia Sport Fishing and Conservation Club is hosting a free kids fishing tournament on Saturday, June 9.

    Kids are to meet at the Lions Club pavilion and will be fishing off of the bank. The tournament will run from 10 a.m.-noon.

    Prizes will be given to those who catch the most bluegill or crappie during the tournament, and fishermen should bring a bucket to put the fish in.

    Fisherman can use any type of bait and any type of fishing pole.

    Age groups will be 5-10 and 11-15.

  • Mulberry Grove's run ends...

    CARBONDALE — The Lady Aces ran into a fundamentally sound Goreville team at Monday's super-sectional, falling 14-0.

    Mulberry Grove got a leadoff single from Kayla Zimmerman, but that would be the team's only hit of the game.

    The Lady Aces had a 23-5 record on the season.

  • Austin takes sixth at state...

    Vandalia senior Quenten Austin placed sixth in the state finals of the 110-meter hurdles on Saturday. He tied his school record with a time of 0:15.39.

  • Lady Aces win sectional title

    WOODLAWN - Mulberry Grove fended off a late comeback attempt by Woodlawn to win Saturday's sectional title game, 8-5.

    With the win, the Lady Aces advance to Monday's super-sectional game in Carbondale. Mulberry Grove will face Goreville at noon on the campus of Southern Illinois University.

  • Austin makes state finals in 110...

    CHARLESTON — Vandalia senior Quenten Austin qualified for the state track finals in the 110-meter hurdles after placing fifth in the prelims on Thursday.

    Austin, who was seeded 10th, finished the race in a school record 0:15.39; the winner in the prelims ran a 0:14.54. State finals are on Saturday, with running events beginning at 10 a.m. at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

    Austin placed 11th in the 300-meter hurdles, just missing the cutoff for the finals.

  • South Central scatters hits to...

    EFFINGHAM - South Central scattered 13 hits to all parts of the field and got a strong pitching performance from senior Colby Bushue to beat Windsor, 11-2, in the sectional semifinals on Wednesday, giving the Cougars a spot in Saturday's 10 a.m. sectional championship game against St. Anthony.

    The title game will be played at Evergreen Hollow Park in Effingham. Earlier in the spring, South Central lost to St. Anthony, 6-5.

  • Blankenship tosses no-hitter to...

    Mulberry Grove senior Megan Blankenship threw a no-hitter against Altamont in the semifinals of the Woodlawn Sectional to give the Lady Aces a 7-1 victory and a spot in Saturday's 11 a.m. sectional final.

    Blankenship was not overpowering, striking out just two, but Altamont was only able to bring across an unearned run in the seventh inning.

    Senior Harley Tompkins led the Lady Aces, with a double, triple, two RBI and two runs.

    The Lady Aces will face Woodlawn the finals.
