  • Saturday updates from the IHSA...

    CHAMPAIGN - It's the final day of the Illinois High School Association Individual State Wrestling Tournament, and at the time of this post, just one Vandal is still alive.

    In the 9 a.m. session, senior Daniel Edwards (152) lost a very tough match to Gage Hedges, 1-0, in the wrestle-back quarterfinals. Had Edwards won the match, he would have placed.

    Senior Levi Ulmer (195) will be wrestling in the wrestle-back semifinals. In that match, he will face Kenny Lindsey of St. Joe-Ogden, a rematch of the Robinson sectional final.

  • Ulmer and Edwards still alive in...

    Seniors Levi Ulmer and Daniel Edwards will both wrestle on the third day of the Illinois High School Association Individual State Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.

    Ulmer, who lost to Logan Staver, 3-0, in the championship semifinals, got an automatic spot in the wrestle-back semifinals, meaning he will place.

  • Bruno makes state in 3-point...

    Vandalia junior Amber Bruno qualified for the state round of the 3-point shootout last Thursday by making eight shots at the Fairfield Sectional finals.

    Her appearance at state will give the Lady Vandals two in two years, as Haley Wollerman qualified last season.

    The state shootout preliminaries are on Thursday at Redbird Arena in Bloomington.

    Throughout the day, this page will provide updates on the Illinois High School Association Individual State Wrestling Tournament as they become available.

    On Friday, two Vandalia wrestlers are guaranteed to wrestle, with three others waiting to see if they will become eligible for the wrestle-back bracket.


    9:22 p.m.: Senior Levi Ulmer earlier tonight lost in the semifinals, 3-0. He will wrestle during the wrestle-back semifinals on Saturday. That round begins at 11 a.m.

  • Two senior wrestlers advance at...

    CHAMPAIGN – Seniors Daniel Edwards and Levi Ulmer won first-round bouts at the individual state tournament on Thursday.

    With their wins, they are assured at least a spot in the wrestle-back bracket if they are unable to win in Friday’s quarterfinal matches. That round starts at 8:30 a.m. at Assembly Hall.

    Ulmer (32-6) defeated Jeffrey Haley (32-11) of Quincy Notre Dame, 14-8, by taking immediate control and fighting all the way to the finish.

    And as an encore, he threw up a Subway pizza sandwich all over the mat.

  • Ulmer takes individual sectional...

    ROBINSON – In a wildly entertaining championship match on Saturday, Vandalia senior Levi Ulmer outlasted one of the best 195-pound wrestlers in Illinois to win an individual sectional championship.

    By winning, Ulmer became the fifth Vandal of the day to qualify for this weekend’s individual state tournament.

    Battling Kenny Lindsey – a senior from St. Joe-Ogden who is ranked No. 1 in the class by www.illinoismatmen.com – Ulmer needed both overtime tiebreaker periods to clinch the victory, taking the bout, 4-3.

  • Vandals nearly score 100 points...

    They will never forget.

    On a night when Vandalia’s five seniors were honored, each of them last Friday contributed to the team’s season-best scoring output in a 94-62 win against Southwestern.

    As spectators clamored for the Vandals to reach 100 points, coach Kevin Jackson substituted for each senior with 2:09 left in the game, allowing them to leave their final home game victorious and to a standing ovation.

  • Season coming to a close for...

    Both of Vandalia's junior high volleyball teams have records better than .500 as the season gets to its final weeks.

    The Jr. Lady Vandals played their final home game on Tuesday against Pana, with the seventh-graders erasing a third-set deficit to win, 25-12, 22-25, 25-17, and the eighth-graders losing, 14-25, 18-25.

    On the season, the seventh-graders are 9-5 (4-1 Jr. Mid-Sate Conference), and the eighth-graders are 11-6 (3-2 JMSC).

    Vandalia has four more matches this season before the regional tournaments, starting on Thursday at Litchfield.
