  • Lady Vandals 'proudly...

    On the verge of losing their first Volley for the Cure game last Thursday, coach Allison Smith gave the Lady Vandals a moving message during a timeout toward the end of the second set.

    With Vandalia trailing 19-18, Smith reminded her club of what was at stake – and it wasn't centered on volleyball.

  • Cougars win MTC championship

    The South Central High School baseball team won its 17th and final Midland Trail Conference Tournament last Friday night, dispatching previously-unbeaten Woodlawn, 10-9.

    Shawn Meyer picked up his fifth win of the season after pitching 6 2/3 innings  and striking out eight. Luke Krajefska picked up the final out to earn the save.

    The Cougars opened the game with a four-run first inning, and added three more in the third and fifth innings.

    The Kaskaskia College Blue Angels are 16-6 in volleyball action this year.

    And with only five sophomores on the Kim Potthast-Rahar-led team, the best may be yet to come. Especially if she can get a few more athletes like St. Elmo grad Brooke Maxey and South Central grad Katie Crain.

  • Tennis team earns fourth win vs...

    The Lady Vandals swept the singles against East Alton-Wood River on Monday and won two of three doubles matches to earn their fourth win of the season.

    That win gives Vandalia some positive momentum as it prepares for Saturday's South Central Conference Tournament in Hillsboro at 9 a.m.

    Coach Kevin Schroeder is hopeful some of his players will be seeded in the top four at Hillsboro, but he expects most of them to be seeded through the draw.

  • South Central wins MTC title

    The South Central High School baseball team held off Woodlawn to win the Midland Trail Conference championship on Friday.

    Shawn Meyer moved his season record to 5-0, while pitching the Cougars to the 10-9 victory. He struck out eight batters in 6 2/3 innings, and Luke Krajefska recorded the final out to earn the save.

    Offensivey, Cole Armstrong was 3-for-5, with a pair of doubles and two RBI.

    Bret Pitts also had two doubles, and Colby Bushue was 3-for-5, with an RBI.

  • South Central reaches 22nd...

    For the 22nd straight year, the South Central High School baseball team will be playing for the Midland Trail Conference championship, in what is the team's final year in the conference.

    After defeating second-seeded North Clay, 11-5, on Wednesday night, the No. 3 Cougars will battle top-seeded Woodlawn for the conference crown on Friday at 7 p.m. in Kinmundy.

    South Central, which will join the National Trail Conference next season, fell behind early on Wednesday, but a four-run fifth inning, and a six-run seventh inning propelled the team to a win.
