HILLSBORO – Seniors Abby Hickerson and Callie George were named all-South Central Conference on Saturday, after placing third in doubles play at the SCC Tournament.

Getting that honor, however, turned out to be quite a challenge for the duo.

Facing the team of Gianna Paden and Breanna Speraneo from Hillsboro after a first-round bye, George and Hickerson had to take the match to three games before closing out the 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 second-round victory.

Included was winning the final three points of the third game.

  • Buddy Bass Tournament (Sept. 24)

The Vandalia Sport Fishing and Conservation Club held a Buddy Bass Tournament on Vandalia Lake on Saturday, Sept. 24.

  • Senior Spotlight: Chelsey...

In their first seasons as varsity players, seniors Chelsey Stewart and Erika Blackwell have been a pleasant surprise for Vandalia tennis coach Kevin Schroeder.

Having combined for eight of the team’s 25 singles wins this season (32 percent), the two are now counted among the most important players on the team, each having once won a decisive singles match during the season.

Schroeder said it was at the beginning of this season, when they both realized they had a chance to latch on to the varsity squad, that their games began to dramatically improve.

  • Lady Vandals beat hosts to win...

PANA – For the first time since 2008, the Lady Vandals won the Pana Tournament, but they couldn’t even get the trophy out of the gym before breaking it.

Shortly after taking group pictures, the ’11 snapped off the trophy, but there was no chance of that diminishing the happiness the team took away from Saturday’s effort.

Vandalia finished 4-1 at the tournament – with the loss coming against Greenville – but because the Lady Vandals beat Pana, which also finished 4-1, they were named tournament champions.

  • Playoff contention looms after...

HILLSBORO – The Vandals are one win closer to making the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Likely to need just five victories to get into the postseason, Vandalia is now at four after knocking off Hillsboro, 27-20, last Friday night.

Nothing is ever assured, but a good chance to get that fifth win will come on Friday night against Southwestern (3-3), which has given up the third-most points (209) in the South Central Conference.

  • Swofford, Herker advance to...

Vandalia senior Derrick Herker and junior Blake Swofford both advanced to the Illinois High School Association Sectional Golf Championships after finishing in the top 10 at the regional match on Tuesday.

Swofford, who a shot a 69, lost a playoff hole to Marquette Catholic's Danny Selby to finish second.

    Herker placed 10th after shooting a 79.

Junior Zach Jackson nearly made the sectional, but he lost a playoff hole for the final spot to Andrew Rybolt of Pana.
