  • Registration begins for spring...

    The Fayette County Family YMCA has several upcoming events and sports leagues.

    For more information regarding any of the following programs or to register, contact the YMCA at 283-1258.

    •Registration for the spring soccer season has begun, with the deadline to register being Saturday, Feb. 25.

    The cost is $25 for YMCA members, and $50 for nonmembers, and each player will receive a T-shirt that will serve as their uniform. A late registration fee of $20 will be charged for anyone who registers between Feb. 25 and Feb. 28.

  • South Central takes third place...

    The South Central boys may be at a turning point in their season.

    Coming into the Midland Trail Conference Tournament as a No. 5 seed, the Cougars upset second-seeded Cisne, 43-31, to take third place on Saturday.

    South Central (6-14) got a game-high 17 points from senior Colby Bushue, who scored 10 of those points during the fourth quarter.

    In the final period, the Cougars outscored Cisne, 21-8, to secure the victory.

    Cisne had led through most of the first half, including a four-point advantage at halftime.

  • Eighth-Grade Tourney Begins

    The Vandalia Junior High eighth-grade boys basketball tournament got under way on Monday and Tuesday. The eight-team tournament will be decided on Thursday, with the championship game beginning at 7:15 p.m. at VJHS.

    The St. Elmo High School boys basketball game against Mulberry Grove and the Wall of Fame ceremony were canceled Friday night and rescheduled for Saturday night. The ceremony will take place between the varsity and JV games, with the JV starting at 6:15 p.m.

    HIGHLAND – Taking 100 or more extra shots every weekday since the summer has paid off for Amber Bruno.

    The Vandalia junior lifted a 3-pointer with about a minute left in the first quarter of Tuesday’s game at the Highland Tournament to score her 1,000th career point, becoming the 10th female in school history to reach the mark.

    Vandalia senior Haley Wollerman needs three more points to reach 1,000 for her career. Those points should be scored on Monday, during a home game against Litchfield.

  • Vandal wrestlers win SCC; split...

    With an “emotional” team win at Litchfield last Thursday, the Vandalia wrestlers secured a perfect South Central Conference record, and the Vandals followed that with a split at a home tri-meet on Saturday.

    Freshman Ryne Lispey – who earned the clinching pin against Litchfield, during a 33-31 victory – had a chance to secure another team win against Monticello on Saturday, but he was pinned by a more-experience opponent.
