  • Lancers rally late to down Lady...

    The Vandalia High School softball team was on the verge of winning its season opener on Monday, but a seven-run seventh inning by Raymond-Lincolnwood sent the Lady Vandals home with a 12-7 loss.

    Heading into the top of the seventh inning, the game was tied 5-5. Vandalia had already come back from being down 2-0 early to take a 3-2 lead, and the Lancers had tied the game three times in the last three innings.

  • Free Baseball and Softball...

    The Kaskaskia College Blue Devil Baseball Program and Blue Angels Softball Program will offer a free clinic to area players ages 6-12. This one-hour clinic will be offered following their home games on Saturday, March 27.

     

    Both teams will host doubleheaders that day starting at 12:00 p.m.

     

    The Blue Devils will play Lake Land College and the free clinic will be held immediately after the game at approximately 4:30 p.m.

    For the Vandalia High School girls basketball team, the 2009-10 season was a rebuilding year. After losing eight seniors and most of the team members who logged significant minutes, the Lady Vandals were depleted, to say the least. First-year head coach Michelle McNary had to rebuild a program basically from the ground up.

  • Seventh-graders win first...

    The Vandalia Junior High School seventh-grade girls volleyball team won its first regional title since 2001, defeating Toledo Cumberland, 25-23, 21-25 and 25-17 on last Thursday night.

    The Lady Vandals advanced to the sectional on Monday night, with a trip to state on the line. They couldn't overcome Casey-Westfield attack heavy offense and lost, 25-14, 25-23.

    "This was the best team we've played all year," Coach Jane Bell said. "They had the most attacks on us all year."

  • Bushue waits to hear for spring...

    It was about nine months ago that Houston Astros’ legend Craig Biggio walked to the podium on draft day and called out Tanner Bushue’s name.

    This spring, the former South Central High School pitcher is gearing up for his first full season in the minor leagues. Bushue was drafted last summer in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The righty was taken in the second round, 69th overall, by the Astros.

    Shortly after being drafted, Bushue signed a deal worth $530,000, plus about $1,200 a month.

  • VJHS seventh-graders win...

    The Vandalia Junior High School seventh-grade volleyball team advanced to sectional play by winning their IESA regional on Thursday.

    This is the first seventh-grade regional title won by VJHS since 2001.

    The VJHS squad will play Casey-Westfield for the sectional tile at 6 p.m. on Monday at Casey-Westfield.

  • No March Madness for Vandalia

    Vandalia fans will have to be content with following Illinois High School basketball March Madness from the stands and in their homes this month, as the Vandals season came to an end three-points short of spilling over into the third month of the year.

    Friday night in front of one of its biggest crowds of the season, the Vandals fell to Pana, 48-45. The third time this season and the second in the past seven days, the game was really a toss up for teams who had split the two regular season meetings.

  • Wrestlers defeated by injuries...

    One might say that Vandalia was lucky to get past Roxana in the sectional last Tuesday, but if that’s the case, Gibson City and the rest of the field were lucky that Vandalia wasn’t at full strength going into the dual team state tournament on Saturday. Not to place Vandalia’s 43-26 loss to the Falcons on the shoulders of those who weren’t well enough to wrestle, but the chatter going on in the stands was full of a lot of “what if’s” surrounding Vandalia’s health. What if Trever Pyle, Brendan Cripe and Justin Hill were all heathy?
