  • Senior Spotlight: Blake Mills

It's hurt for a while now.

Injured during a game against Marquette Catholic almost a month and a half ago, Blake Mills' ankle has yet to fully heal, but that hasn't stopped the Vandalia senior from taking the field every game this season.

Playing exclusively on the defensive side of the ball since his injury, save for a couple of snaps at center last Friday, Mills has established himself as the Vandals' top tackler, with 54 solos and six for a loss on the season.

St. Elmo High School seniors Ben Sperry and Blaine Scholes were named co-MVPs of the Egyptian-Illini Conference to lead a group of area players  who made up the entire all-conference first team.

In total, area players filled all but six of the spots on the second team and honorable mention team, with players from Beecher City rounding out the selections.

  • Patoka falls in tight battle at...

ST. ELMO – Patoka kept the game close against Beecher City last Friday, but the Lady Warriors were unable to get the win in the seventh-place game of the Egyptian-Illini Conference Tournament.

The Lady Eagles won the game, 26-24, 25-22.

That loss came a day after Patoka also had a close battle with Cowden-Herrick in the final game of pool play, which saw Patoka lose, 25-18, 25-20.

  • Mills finds calling in minors

When attending a minor league baseball game, a decent amount of the entertainment value doesn’t even come from the players on the field.

At Kane County Cougars games, it’s a St. Elmo graduate who helps ensure that fans get their money’s worth when the team isn't on the field.

Heather Mills, the salutatorian of the 2005 class, is now employed in the team’s promotions department after a few years in the ticket department.
