  • BREAKING NEWS: Osorio and Cowger...

    Seniors Angel Osorio and Will Cowger qualified for state on Friday.

    Osorio is headed to Charleston for the second consecutive year in the high jump. He cleared 6 feet, 5 inches at the Robinson Sectional, placing second.

    Cowger, who missed state by a couple of inches last spring is headed there next week after placing third in the shot put, with a throw of 50 feet, 3 1/2 inches.

    In addition to sending two athletes to state, Vandalia set two new school records.

  • Ruffner, Beasley and Hill...

    Three local athletes will be competing in Charleston on the blue track this weekend at the Illinois girls track and field state finals.

    At Friday's sectional in Newton, Sierah Ruffner of Vandalia Community High School, and Ashlynn Beasley and Abby Hill of St. Elmo High School qualified for state.

    Ruffner has been Vandalia's most-consistent competitor all spring. The freshman will be competing in the high jump at state, an event that has been her bread and butter all year. Ruffner is no stranger to state competition.

  • Vandalia beats Pana on walkoff...

    In two regular season meetings, Vandalia was able to beat Pana easily, winning 12-2 and 8-1. When the Vandals were matched up with the Panthers in the regional quarterfinals, all indications were that it would be another thrashing by Vandalia. But with its season on the line, Pana gave the Vandals a fight, with the game coming down to a bases-loaded safety squeeze in the bottom of the seventh inning.

    "Pana came out with nothing to lose and ready to go. They gave us some fits today," Vandalia coach Luke Hohlt said.

  • Lady Vandals fall to St. Anthony...

    The Lady Vandals had some tough losses this season, but perhaps the most painful will be the 1-0 loss to St. Anthony in the regional quarter final on Tuesday.

    Senior Maggie Childers pitched a gem in her final game for Vandalia, scattering five hits and not allowing an earned run in six innings of work.

    St. Anthony's run came in the bottom of the third after a lead-off single ended up scoring on an error. The Lady Vandals were held to four hits, but couldn't string anything together until the seventh inning

  • BREAKING NEWS: SCC will realign...

    As first reported last week in The Leader-Union, the South Central Conference will realign for the 2012-13 season.

    On Wednesday afternoon, the principals of the 10 SCC schools met in Litchfield. Litchfield High School Principal Mark Hunt made a motion to remove Roxana, Alton-Marquette and East Alton-Wood River from the conference and add Nokomis, Staunton and Gillespie. Vandalia Principal Randy Protz seconded the motion and the 10 districts voted 7-3 to pass the motion. The dissenting votes were cast by Roxana, Alton-Marquette and EAWR.

  • Austin leads frosh/soph Vandals...

    Despite the sudden drop in temperature and high winds over the weekend, the Vandalia freshmen and sophomore track and field team was victorious at the frosh/soph South Central Conference Championships on in Litchfield on Saturday.

  • Three Vandals are conference...

    Three Vandalia boys track and field athletes are conference champions and  the team placed third on Tuesday at the South Central Conference Championships in Carlinville.

    Seniors Angel Osorio and Will Cowger, and sophomore Quenten Austin all took home first-place finishes.

    Osorio cleared 6 feet, 4 inches in the high jump to win the event. He also placed sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.7 seconds.

  • Vandalia sweeps Ramsey in...

    The Lady Vandals picked up two wins on Tuesday, sweeping Ramsey in a doubleheader. Vandalia's wins were the second and third in a week's time.

    Game one of the twin-bill was a battle. Ramsey took a  3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, but Vandalia was able to tie the game in the bottom half, thanks to a couple of errors by the Rams.

  • BREAKING NEWS: Vandals win frosh...

    With 85 points, Vandalia won the frosh/soph South Central Conference title.

    The Vandals had first-place finishes in the high jump, 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles by Quenten Austen and a first-place finish and new school record in the 4x100-meter relay.

    The conference championship was held in Litchfield on Saturday.

  • SCC likely to re-align

    Rumors were flying at theVandalia Sports Booster Club meeting on Saturday that the South Central Conference will re-align again.

    Speculation is that Gillespie High School and Staunton will once again join the ranks, along with Nokomis. Roxana, East Alton-Wood River and Alton Marquette would depart the SCC.

    An official announcement is expected next Wednesday, but things could change.

    Vandalia's athletic director-in-waiting, Kevin Jackson, did not want to speak before anything was finalized, as "there are still some things that could go haywire."
