  • Lady Vandals can't contain...

    For the second straight game, a Lady Vandals player scored her 1,000th career point, but the team was unable to secure a victory.

    Senior Haley Wollerman on Monday became the 10th female member of the school’s 1,000-point club, six days after junior Amber Bruno also reached the milestone.

    “Hopefully, it will help us settle down and relax, but it’s a great accomplishment,” said coach Michelle McNary. “I knew a couple of years ago that they would have an opportunity to do this if they stayed healthy.”

  • St. Elmo routs MGHS; inducts to...

    The St. Elmo High School basketball team had little trouble handling Mulberry Grove on Saturday, the same night the school inducted new members to its Wall of Fame.

    Prior to the Eagles' 94-28 thrashing of the Aces, four individuals and one team were honored.

    Bob Olson, Bruce Williams, Dan Denton and Fred Moss were the individuals inducted, and the 1944-45 boys basketball team was also honored.

    The game, meanwhile, saw the Eagles take control immediately.

  • Field of Dreams committee holds...

    The Vandalia Field of Dreams committee discussed many areas of business last Thursday at its first meeting of the year.

    •Work on the softball field renovation is mostly complete, but there are still two big sections that need to be finished.

    Neither of the storage garages on the sides of the dugouts have doors installed, and the committee wants that work done before the season to help ease with organization.

  • Former St. Elmo athlete to be...

    A former St. Elmo athlete will be inducted into the Murray State University Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday.

    Bob Doty, a standout track athlete, will be one of six former athletes inducted this year.

    During his senior season at St. Elmo in 1959, Doty won a state championship in the 100-yard dash and was the state runner-up in the 220-yard dash.

    He also still holds St. Elmo records in those 100- and 200-meter dashes, with times of 10.8 and 22.4 seconds, respectively.

  • Registration begins for spring...

    The Fayette County Family YMCA has several upcoming events and sports leagues.

    For more information regarding any of the following programs or to register, contact the YMCA at 283-1258.

    •Registration for the spring soccer season has begun, with the deadline to register being Saturday, Feb. 25.

    The cost is $25 for YMCA members, and $50 for nonmembers, and each player will receive a T-shirt that will serve as their uniform. A late registration fee of $20 will be charged for anyone who registers between Feb. 25 and Feb. 28.

  • South Central takes third place...

    The South Central boys may be at a turning point in their season.

    Coming into the Midland Trail Conference Tournament as a No. 5 seed, the Cougars upset second-seeded Cisne, 43-31, to take third place on Saturday.

    South Central (6-14) got a game-high 17 points from senior Colby Bushue, who scored 10 of those points during the fourth quarter.

    In the final period, the Cougars outscored Cisne, 21-8, to secure the victory.

    Cisne had led through most of the first half, including a four-point advantage at halftime.

  • Eighth-Grade Tourney Begins

    The Vandalia Junior High eighth-grade boys basketball tournament got under way on Monday and Tuesday. The eight-team tournament will be decided on Thursday, with the championship game beginning at 7:15 p.m. at VJHS.
