  • Protz finding success in...

    Vandalia resident Randy Protz is currently in second place in the points standings for the Super Pro Division at Coles County Dragway.

    At the end of August, Protz qualified for the 2012 Coles County bracket finals team. His daughter, Brandy, also qualified in the High School division.

    Wednesday's golf event between Vandalia, Litchfield and Christ Our Rock Lutheran high schools scheduled at Vandalia Country Club has been canceled due to the weather. No makeup date has been set at this time.

  • Lady Vandals win Altamont...

    ALTAMONT - The Lady Vandals continued their hot start to the season, winning the Altamont Tournament on Saturday to move their season record to 6-0.

    Vandalia eeked into the title game, getting by South Central, 26-28, 25-19, 17-15, in the final game of pool play. The Lady Cougars went on to beat Greenville in three sets to place third.

    In the championship game, Vandalia battled Cumberland, winning 25-9, 24-26, 15-12. Senior RaeChelle Leiken secured 12 kills in the title match.

  • Vandalia falls in rain-delayed...

    Steady rains marred the second half of one of the biggest games on Vandalia's football schedule, as Carlinville's dominating rushing attack was too much for the Vandals to handle in a 32-14 loss on Friday.

    Brendan Stewart rushed for more than 200 yards and had touchdowns of 77 and 65 yards for Carlinville (2-0).

    Vandalia's scores came on a 2-yard run by Luke Smith in the first quarter and a 10-yard pass from Tim Ritchey to Ryan Ambuehl in the third quarter.

    Vandalia (1-1) travels to Staunton (2-0) next Friday.

  • Vandalia, South Central to play...

    The Vandalia and South Central High School volleyball teams will be playing in Saturday's Altamont Tournament. Both schools will be playing at Altamont Grade School.

    Vandalia's schedule is as follows:

    •1:30 p.m. vs. South Central

    The big question coming into this football season was, “How are the Vandals going to replace Levi Ulmer?”

    The bruising fullback moved on to Ripon College, leaving a 1,200-yard void at the fullback position, but ask anyone in the Vandalia football program whether they think a void really exists, and you’ll get a pretty standard answer.

  • Earnest wins two Team USA medals

    Vandalia native Josie Earnest added to her collection of bowling awards by taking the individual bronze medal for Team USA in a tournament this past week.

    Bowling at the international PABCON Adult Championships in Henderson, Nev., Earnest finished third in the Master’s Division all-events on Saturday by averaging nearly 220 pins per game throughout the week-long tournament.

    The all-events pin totals included games bowled earlier in the week as an individual and those bowled with a team.

  • Big names in VCHS Athletic HOF...

    Vandalia’s last state-champion wrestler and the last wrestling team to place at state join the coach who brought

    Vandalia’s wrestling team to prominence and one of the best basketball players ever to play at the school in the 2012 athletic hall of fame class.

    Jo-E Smith, the 2007 individual state wrestling champion at 152 pounds, will be inducted as an individual, as well as with the 2007 wrestling team, which placed second in the state.

  • Lady Vandals open season with...

    Two seniors dominated the attack and 12 service aces helped bring the Lady Vandals a season-opening conference win on Tuesday, as they defeated Staunton, 25-18, 25-19.

    Sierah Ruffner led the offense in the first set, putting down all five of her kills during the set, including three in four points during a stretch that saw Vandalia widen its lead to five points at 16-11.
