  • Vandals use late push to beat...

For the second straight game, Vandalia was able to contain its opponent's center, but the Vandals still needed a furious fourth-quarter comeback last Friday to defeat Litchfield, 58-50.

Junior Leyton Godoyo was the primary defender of Litchfield’s Dale Volentine, who had just 12 points during the game. Godoyo was also responsible for guarding Hillsboro’s Matt DeLuka three days before.

Combined, Volentine and DeLuka had 37 fewer points then they did in the first meetings of the season.

The three Vandalia seniors who wrestled on senior night last Thursday came away victorious, but the team lost to O’Fallon, 36-24.

Dayin Godberson (182), Levi Ulmer (195) and Anthony Fladeland (285) each earned wins that served as three of the first four for the Vandals, and that was expected, as those three had combined to win 68 matches coming into the dual meet.

A former Patoka athlete will be inducted to the Southern Illinois University Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday.
John Garrett is among the six inductees in the 2012 class.

Garrett, who was a 5-foot-10, point guard nicknamed "Mouse," scored 995 points over 72 games (13.8 points per game) during his three-year career at SIU. When he played, from 1969-72, freshmen were not eligible.

  • Senior Spotlight: Haley Wollerman

Discouraged after being hit with a ticky-tack foul, a stoic Haley Wollerman sat with her head down on the Vandalia bench.

The senior guard wasn’t used to going to the bench with four fouls – especially not in the third quarter – but she knew exactly how her role needed to change at that point.

Moments later, Wollerman became like a player-coach to her teammates, calling out to them if she saw a screen coming or if someone needed to move elsewhere on the court.

  • Vandal boys split season series...

The Vandals pushed the tempo for the entire game against Hillsboro on Tuesday to produce a 21-point victory, the team’s first since Jan. 10.

Vandalia opened the game on an 18-0 run, and held Hillsboro star Matt DeLuka without a field goal and the Hilltoppers without a 3-pointer during a 57-36 win.

“I was very pleased with our effort and the intensity on the defensive end,” said coach Kevin Jackson. “We flat-out played better, and that’s what we needed to get back to after getting beat last Tuesday (by Teutopolis).”
