  • Eagles leave VHT without a win

The St. Elmo/Brownstown Eagles didn't want to leave the Vandalia Holiday Tournament without a win.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, they did.
Pana rolled past St. Elmo/Brownstown, 62-29, in Tuesday's ninth-place game of VHT.
The Eagles stayed close early, but cold shooting and numerous turnovers doomed SEB in this one. The loss left SEB winless in five tournament games.

  • Area roundup: BSE girls win,...

BROWNSTOWN — With three and a half minutes remaining in Monday's girls basketball game, the Brownstown/St. Elmo Bombers had a comfortable double-digit lead.
Three minutes later, the game was on the line.
But Gabi Moore made two late free throws, and the Lady Bombers held on for a 45-38 win over Altamont.
Moore's free throws proved big down the stretch.
"She stepped up and made her free throws at the end, so I'm really proud of Gabi," Pruett said.

  • VHT Day Three: Flora, Greenville...

In the recent history of the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, Flora has found its way to the championship game time and time again.
    This year is no different.
Bryce Pearce made five of six free throws with under a minute to play, and Flora edged defending champion St. Anthony, 55-50, on Monday night.
The win puts the Wolves in the title game, while the Bulldogs had to settle for the third-place game.
It's the fifth trip to the title game in six years for the Wolves, who always seem to find a way to the title game.

  • VHT Day Three: Vandals handle...

Fueled by an intense trapping defense, the Vandalia Vandals ran past the St. Elmo/Brownstown Eagles, 65-39, on Monday at the 43rd Annual Vandalia Holiday Tournament.
The win propelled the Vandals into the fifth-place game on Tuesday night.
With the loss, the Eagles remained winless at the tourney and headed to the ninth-place game.
Vandalia had a small lead when it switched from man-to-man to a 1-2-2 trapping press. The game sped up, the Eagles turned the ball over time and time again, and the Vandals began to get easy hoops or wide-open jumpers.

  • VHT Day Three: Cougars will play...

The South Central Cougars are probably sick of playing first thing in the morning.
Playing in the first game of the day for the third-straight time, the Cougars appeared sluggish early in a 57-49 loss to Altamont on Day Three of the 43rd Annual Vandalia Holiday Tournament on Monday.
Early risers all-tourney, the Cougars managed just six points in the first quarter and were playing catch-up the rest of the way.

  • VHT Day Two: South Central tops...

As Saturday morning's action began at the 43rd Annual Vandalia Holiday Tournament, two teams were searching for their first win in Pool A.
And when the day's first game concluded, the South Central Cougars were winless no more.
The Cougars used a big second half rally to knock off Pana, 45-43, on Day Two of the VHT.
It was the first win at the event for the Cougars. And it was an impressive one.
South Central overcame a 15-point deficit to shock the Panthers.
