    The annual Fayette County Fair race is always held mid-week with the fair activities, and along with racing from Friday, July 11, the track has seen a lot of good racing.
    Craig Kern has become red hot, B.J. Deal has started to flex his muscles and Eric Harris has emerged as a new challenger in the Street Stock class.

    The annual midseason Fair race is always held on Wednesday night during the fair. With the county fair in full swing, the speedway was again alive and full of energy.

  • Freight to play in state tourney...

    The Freight will once again come of out retirement this weekend to play in the Amateur Softball Association’s annual state wooden bat fast-pitch softball tournament in Casey.
    Vandalia will play its first game on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Warrior Field against Teutopolis Miller Lite in the opening game of the tournament.
    With a win, Vandalia would advance to play the Springfield Frannies at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Warrior Field.

  • Post 95 wins Sr. Legion District...

    VANDALIA - Post 95 completed a five-game run through the loser's bracket of the Sr. Legion District Tournament on Friday night, knocking off Olney, 13-3, to earn the tournament championship and a bye in next week's New Baden Fifth Division Tournament.

    Connor Beasley homered for the third time of the tournament, and Vandalia scored with consistency throughout the game to knock off Olney for the second straight day.

  • Post 95 to play for Sr. Legion...

    ROBINSON – Vandalia knocked off Olney 14-2 on Thursday evening to force a double-elimination championship game in the Sr. Legion District Tournament.

    The teams will battle again on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Robinson City Park.

    Quinn Wadkins and Austin Schwarm each homered for Post 95 on Thursday, supporting an eight-inning complete game by Matt Tomazzoli, who struck out six.

    Vandalia scored twice in the first and three times in both the fourth and fifth innings to build a lead, and extended it with to runs in the seventh and three in the eighth.

  • Vandalia to face Altamont in the...

    Vandalia will open the Jr. Legion District Tournament on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against Altamont.

    Post 95 is the No. 7 seed, while Altamont is seeded second. Effingham is the top seed, and South Central is seeded fourth.

    South Central opens play against No. 5 Teutopolis on Friday at 5:30 p.m. With a win, South Central advances to play on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., while a loss would send SC to the 10 a.m. game on Saturday.

  • Vandalia stays alive in Sr....

    ROBINSON – Vandalia faced two must-win games on Wednesday at the Sr. Legion District Tournament, and despite falling behind in both games, Post 95 got to 30 wins on the season with a pair of victories, advancing the team to the championship game of the tournament.

    Post 95 erased a 6-2 deficit against Robinson, using an eight-run inning to turn it into a blowout 13-6 win, and after falling behind 1-0 to T-Town, back-to-back extra-base hits in the third and a three-run eighth gave Vandalia a 8-4 win.

  • South Central grad Spencer...

    On the same day he will pitch for the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star Game, South Central High School graduate Spencer Patton was traded to the Texas Rangers organization.

    Patton was traded by the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday in a deal in which they acquired veteran reliever Jason Frasor. Patton was assigned to the Triple-A Round Rock Express.

    Patton was a 24th-round selection of the Royals in 2011, and he steadily advanced throughout their minor league system.

  • Vandalia's fastest soccer...

    VANDALIA – Austin Durbin finished Monday’s session of the Challenger Sports soccer camp in basketball shoes.

    One of his soccer cleats – which was just barely hanging on as useable – finally met its demise, splitting open at the seams, but Durbin wasn’t about to let that stop him from playing in the end-of-the-day scrimmage.

    And despite the decreased footing, the senior never wavered from his signature playing style – fast and aggressive.

  • Vandalia upset at District...

    Top-seeded Vandalia was upset in the first round of the District Tournament on Sunday, taking a 6-4 loss to No. 4 Teutopolis in Robinson.

    T-Town’s Andy Borries struck out 15 in the winner’s bracket semifinals of the District Tournament, which was delayed by rain on Saturday and Monday, pushing Vandalia’s next game to Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.

    American Legion baseball exists in part to teach young men of this country the importance of sportsmanship, good health and active citizenship by participating in a sport supported by veterans.

    The Legion itself promotes these values on its website, but too many times, these values are forgotten when adults involved with the programs develop their own ulterior motives.
