  • St. Elmo top seed at its tourney

    The host team has been given the top seed and will play in the first game of the 57th annual St. Elmo Holiday Tournament.
    The seeds for the tournament, which runs from Dec. 13-17, are as follows:
    #1 – St. Elmo  
    #2 – Cumberland
    #3 – Vandalia
    #4 – Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City
    #5 – Mulberry Grove
    #6 – South Central
    #7 – Ramsey  
    #8 – Clay City

  • Cade signs for track at McKendree

    For the second time in two weeks, a track athlete has signed a letter of intent to continue at the college level.

  • Junior High

    Vandalia Junior High’s eighth-grade boys defeated Hillsboro, 47-27, last Tuesday.
    The Junior Vandals lead 8-6 after one quarter and 20-13 after two quarters. They held at 19-7 edge in the third quarter and 8-7 edge in the fourth to take the win.
    Markus Isaiah led the eighth-graders with 15 points, and Drew Thompson added 10 points. Other scorers –Tarkington 8, Casey 4, Goldsmith 4, Smith 2, Marquardt 2, Sasse 2.

    Vandalia’s eighth-grade girls squad improved to 14-4 on Monday with a 19-14 win over Teutopolis.

  • Lady Bombers fall in season...

    Brownstown-St. Elmo never recovered from a slow start and lost its season opener to Mt. Olive on Tuesday, 75-42.
    The Lady Bombers were outscored 24-3 in the first quarter, and that edge stayed the same at halftime as each team scored 15 in the second quarter.
    Mt. Olive added eight points to its lead in the third quarter and four more in the final stanza.
    Claire Wilhour led the Lady Bombers with 15 points, 11 of those coming in the second half.

    A basket with 1.5 seconds left in the game gave Altamont a 59-57 win over Vandalia in the Lady Vandals’ season opener on Tuesday night.

    Marquardt has top 10s at sectional meet

    Vandalia Community High School’s Olivia Marquardt scored enough points on her own to give the school a 14th-place finish at the IHSA sectional swimming meet at Urbana.
    Marquardt placed fourth in the girls 100-yard butterfly, with a time of 1:02:43, and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 1:03.22.

    When Curtis Gordon began pole-vaulting, as a sixth-grader at Vandalia Junior High School, he did so competitively on a limited basis.
