  • Patoka Insider: Cain's walk...

    PATOKA – It all started with a walk.

    And while that’s not the most exciting play in baseball, it set the foundation for all sorts of excitement for the Warriors in a 6-3 win against Webber last Thursday.

    With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Cain battled back from an 0-2 count to draw a walk and start a five-run rally that propelled Patoka to its first victory of the season.

    •April 6 – Patton, a South Central graduate, pitched two innings of relief during a 5-0 loss at Myrtle Beach. The Kansas City Royals prospect allowed two hits, including a home run, and one walk, while striking out two.

  • Local man harvests 23-pound...

    Vandalia resident Todd McDowell harvested a 23-pound turkey on Monday, the first day of turkey hunting season.

    Hunting near the Kaskaskia River, McDowell got the kill early in the morning.

    In addition to its size, the turkey had a 9-inch beard and 1-inch spurs.

    A photo of McDowell and his turkey was lost due to a memory card malfunction.

  • Liberty Shops purchase naming...

    Both high school fields at Vandalia Community High School have now been given naming rights.

    Liberty Shops has purchased the naming rights to the high school softball field, according to Vandalia Field of Dreams President Tom Lucken.

    Liberty Shops will own the naming rights to the field for the next five years at $3,000 per year.

    Lucken said the committee plans to use the first installment to purchase a new scoreboard for the softball field.

    Vandalia Mutual owns the naming rights on the baseball field.

    SOUTH CENTRAL

    Though South Central has had mixed results early in the season, the Cougars found a way to pick up a big win on Tuesday.

    Battling Class 2A Greenville at home, South Central got a complete game from senior Dan Diss and three doubles to defeat the Comets, 7-5.

    The Cougars (3-5) scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take a 6-1 lead, and held off Greenville, which scored three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to get within a run before South Central added another run in the sixth.

  • Beasley shines in shutout of...

    ST. ELMO – Senior Connor Beasley set the school record for strikeouts, and the Eagles offense took advantage of several Brownstown errors to pick up a win on Monday night.

    Beasley struck out 19 batters in a record-breaking performance that left the Bombers with just two hits and St. Elmo with an 8-0 win in one of the last games between the two schools before they co-op in baseball next season.

  • Vandals can't find big hit...

    VANDALIA – The Vandals had several base runners, but never could find a big hit to drive them home on Tuesday in a loss to Altamont.

    Six runners were left in scoring position and 11 total runners were stranded as the Indians used a late push to take a 10-1 victory at Vandalia Mutual Field.

    “We had the bases loaded a couple of times, and we just have to come up big in those situations,” said coach Luke Hohlt. “I am confident we will get there with these guys.”

  • Vandals 1-1, Bombers 0-2 at...

    VANDALIA – Hits were hard to find for the Vandals and Bombers in the first game of Saturday’s round-robin in Vandalia, and one run was enough for Vandalia to secure the win.

    Both teams had three hits in the game, but a first-inning RBI infield single by Michael Wells was enough to give the Vandals the 1-0 victory

    “I thought that we could have put the ball in play some more, but I am happy we came away with a win,” said Vandalia coach Luke Hohlt.

  • Lady Vandals Insider: Plenty of...

    VANDALIA – It’s hard to say if the Lady Vandals will ever have a true group of regular starters this season.

    With some 15 players who have proven they deserve playing time, coach Brian Buscher has employed several different lineups already this spring to give as many players as possible the chance to get on the field.

    “We’ve basically played 14 players, and Kylie Sellers will hopefully be back next week, so that’s 15 in the rotation,” Buscher said. “The girls will have be patient.”
