  • Bell completes triathlon

    Vandalia graduate Drew Bell last Friday completed an Olympic-length triathlon at the Collegiate National Championships in Tempe, Ariz.

    Competing with a club team from the University of Illinois, Bell completed the event – which combines a 1,500-meter swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride and a 10-kilometer run – in 2:10:47 to finish 239th overall and 224th among men.

    There were 1,001 overall athletes and 595 men in the field.

    Nomination period open for VCHS Athletic Hall of Fame inductions

    The nomination period is open for this year’s Vandalia Community High School Athletic Hall of Fame inductions.

    Forms are available in the high school office, and should be sent to Kevin Jackson, VCHS Athletic Director, 1109 N. 8th St., Vandalia, Ill. 62471.

    In order to be nominated, the following conditions must be met.

    Deadline for YMCA summer baseball and softball is this Saturday night; umpires also sought for YMCA leagues

    The deadline to register for the YMCA’s summer youth softball and baseball programs is on Saturday at 9 p.m.

    Several different leagues are available.

  • Earnest named first-team All-...

    Vandalia graduate Jessica Earnest was named a first-team All-American in women's bowling on Wednesday night.

    This year marks the first time the Vanderbilt senior has been named to the first team by the National Ten Pin Coaches Association. In the past three years, she has been named a second-team All-American.

    Earnest was honored at the Champions Banquet, an annual event held prior to the NCAA bowling championships.

  • Patoka beats Webber for first win

    PATOKA – After being shut out in the first two games of the season, Warriors coach Joey Eddy had a simple message for his team last Thursday.

    “Let’s make a statement,” he said prior to Patoka’s 6-3 win against Webber.

    And the Warriors sure took that message to heart.

    After leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, Patoka’s offense went to work with two outs in the second, scoring five runs on three hits, three walks and an error.
