  • Ambuehl, Strobel headed to state...

    Senior Ryan Ambuehl and sophomore Ben Strobel will represent Vandalia at next week's Illinois High School Association state track meet.

    Ambuehl qualified for the meet in the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter dash, while Strobel made it in the 3,200-meter run.

    Running at the Lawrenceville Sectional on Friday, Ambuehl won the 110-meter hurdles in 15.47 seconds, and took second in the 400-meter dash, with a time of 51.84 seconds.

    Strobel took third in the 3,200, but beat the automatic state qualifying time with a school-record time of 9:59.07.

  • Meyer takes fourth in the state...

    EAST PEORIA - Vandalia eighth-grader Emma Meyer placed fourth in the pole vault state finals on Saturday, clearing a school record 9 feet, 9 inches.

    Vaulting at the Illinois Elementary School Association state finals at the EastSide Centre, Meyer was one of four vaulters to make it to 9-9, but she was unable to get over 10 feet.

    But with a school record and a top-five finish, Meyer said she was still pleased with her day.

  • Ruffner places 11th at state in...

    Vandalia senior Sierah Ruffner ended her high school athletic career with an 11th-place finish in the high jump at the Illinois High School Association state finals.

    Ruffner cleared 5 feet, 2 inches - as she had in the prelims - but was unable to get over 5-3.

  • Gordon repeats as state champion

    EAST PEORIA - Vandalia eighth-grader Curtis Gordon has repeated as state champion, clearing 12 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault.

    Gordon battled an athlete from Parkside all the way to the final height, with Gordon clearing 12-9 on his third attempt.

    Prior to the pole vault, Gordon placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles.

    The Illinois Elementary School Association state finals are held at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria.

    Three teams from the area have made regional championship games.

    On Friday, (2) Mulberry Grove will battle (1) Altamont at St. Elmo at 4:30 p.m.

    On Saturday, (2) Ramsey will battle (1) Nokomis at Ramsey at 11 a.m.

    BASEBALL

    On Saturday, (2) South Central will battle (1) Altamont at Lions Field in Kinmundy at 11 a.m.

  • Ruffner makes state high jump...

    CHARLESTON - In her third trip to the state track meet, Sierah Ruffner qualified for the finals of the high jump.

    The Vandalia senior cleared 5 feet, 2 inches with ease to automatically qualify for Saturday's state finals in the event, something she was unable to do in her freshman and junior years.

  • Lady Vandals get first regional...

    Vandalia's softball tem held off a late rally on Monday to earn its first win in a regional tournament since 2007.

    Wesclin scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but that would be one run short in a 7-6 win for the Lady Vandals, who now play No. 1 seed Carlyle at Carlyle on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

    Junior Megan Godoyo threw a complete game, striking out four and allowing no earned runs, as Vandalia (4-21) committed six errors in just its fifth regional tournament win in the past 16 seasons.

  • Vandalia/Carlinville suspended...

    CARLINVILLE  — Because there are no lights at Carlinville's high school baseball field, the regional quarterfinal game between Vandalia and Carlinville was suspended after 11 innings on Monday due to impending darkness.

    Tied at 4-4, the game will resume at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon in Carlinville, with the winner facing No. 1 seed Litchfield in the regional semifinals at Vandalia on Wednesday.

  • Seven Jr. Vandals qualify for...

    Seven Jr. Vandals qualified for the Illinois Elementary School Association Class AA state track meet, with six girls and one boy making the meet.

    Eighth-grader Curtis Gordon qualified in two events, tying his school record of 12 feet in the pole vault to place first at the Pana Sectional, and finishing second in the 110-meter hurdles.

    For the girls, three seventh-graders and three eighth-graders will make the trip to the Eastside Centre in East Peoria on Friday and Saturday.

  • St. Elmo's Hill, Patoka...

    Two local athletes have qualified for the Illinois High School Association state track meet after placing at the Newton Sectional on Friday.

    St. Elmo junior Molly Hill will become a three-time state qualifier in the discus, after advancing with a throw of 101 feet, 6 inches.

    She placed seventh in the state last season.

    Patoka freshman Taylor Issak will make her first state appearance after qualifying in the 300-meter hurdles, with a time of 47.96 seconds, which is the 11th fastest sectional time among qualifiers.
