  • Wrestlers fifth at Princeton...

    With one first place, two seconds and one fourth-place finish, the Vandalia wrestlers accumulated 137 points to finish fifth at the Princeton Invitational last Friday and Saturday.
    Coal City won the invitational title with 186 points, Coal City was second with 158, Orion was third with 145.50 and Clinton was fourth with 143.
    Garett Stewart picked up the Vandals’ championship, at 182 pounds, defeating Stevie Silva of Manteno in the title matchup, 3-2. Stewart currently has a record of 21-2.

  • Big fourth quarter lifts Vandals...

    Trailing by three going at the end of the third quarter, the Vandalia Vandals outscored Mulberry Grove 33-10 in the final quarter to pick up a win in the Morrisonville Tournament on Tuesday.

    A free throw by Rebecca Caldieraro with 11 seconds left broke a tie and gave Staunton a 44-43 win over the Lady Vandals last Thursday in Vandalia.

  • Seventh-graders now 17-2

    Vandalia’s seventh-grade boys pounded Greenville, 43-14, on Tuesday to improve to 6-0 in conference play at 17-2 overall.
    Devin Peebles led the Vandals with 16 points.
    Vandalia – Peebles 7 2-2 16, Hagy 2 2-2 8, Politte 2 0-0 6, Well 2 0-0 6, McNutt 2 0-0 4, White 1 0-0 2, Nestrick 0 1-2 1.
    Three-pointers – Hagy 2, Politte 2, Well 2.
    Last Thursday, the Vandals overwhelmed Litchfield 49-6, with Peebles scoring 16 and Aiden Politte adding 13.

  • JH Volleyball

    The Vandalia Junior High School eighth-grade volleyball team opened its season on Tuesady with a 25-13, 25-13 win over Shelbyville.
    The seventh-graders lost their opener, 3-25, 11-25.
    The seventh-grade squad plays in the Edwardsville Tournament this Saturday, and the Lady Vandals host Altamont next Tuesday afternoon.

    Vandalia’s wrestlers picked up easy wins over Robinson and Murphysboro, then came from behind to defeat Monticello in a home quadrangular on Saturday.

    On its way to defending its state title, Effingham St. Anthony successfully defended its title at the First National Bank Vandalia Holiday Tournament.

  • Vandal wrestlers fifth of 43 at...

    With midway through the season, it’s a good time for Vandalia’s wrestlers to assess where they stand, both individually and as a team, and the event in Springfield last week served that purpose.
    And the Vandals came through the two-day Super Dual known as Abe’s Rumble strong, finishing fifth in a field of 43 teams, including some of the best in the state.
    Vandalia finished first in its pool as it had a chance to go up against some of the top-ranked Class 1A teams in the state, including No. 1 Lena-Winslow.

    The Lady Vandals were held winless in four games at the Newton Thanksgiving Tournament.
