  • Lady Vandals fall to Hillsboro

    Facing a 13-point deficit, the Vandalia Lady Vandals didn't quit.
    They rallied instead.
    But in the end, a solid comeback was not enough, as Hillsboro held on for a 54-45 win over Vandalia on Thursday night in South Central Conference action.
    Utilizing a solid inside-outside game, the Hiltoppers had a 13-point lead in the first half. But the host Vandals showed some tenacity, fought back and cut the deficit to one.

  • Vandals come up short at Carlyle

    CARLYLE —  As Saturday night's game with Carlyle played out, two key factors emerged.
    The host Indians dominated the boards, getting second and third chances again and again with offensive rebounds while holding the visiting Vandals to one and done on the other end.
    And as simple as it sounds, the Vandals just couldn't get enough shots to fall.
    The result of both of those factors was another loss for the Vandals. Carlyle knocked off Vandalia, 66-48, on Saturday night.

  • Gillespie uses big run to get...

    GILLESPIE —A long layoff may have caught up with the Vandalia Vandals.
    The Vandals returned to action after nearly two weeks off and suffered a 70-62 loss at Gillespie on Friday night.
    The Vandals hadn't played since Nov. 29, when they finished the Canton Tournament. And after a solid first quarter, the rust showed in the second period, as the Vandals could only watch as the Miners went on a 17-0 run to pull away for good.

  • Lady Vandals heading to Mattoon...

    The Vandalia Lady Vandals will be among the teams competing at the 36th Annual Mattoon Girls Basketball Christmas Tournament.
    The tourney is scheduled for Dec. 26, 27 and 29.
    Galesburg is the defending champion. The tourney schedule is below.

  • Lady Rams run past Hornets

    RAMSEY — The Ramsey Lady Rams converted steals into layups again and again in the second half to secure a 37-25 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City on Monday night.
    Several easy buckets late in the game turned a close one into a double-digit victory for the hosts, who were playing for the first time in two weeks.
    With active hands and quick guards, Ramsey was able to pressure the visiting Hornets into several turnovers in the second half. Many of those Cowden-Herrick turnovers led directly to layups.

  • Area girls roundup: BSE girls...

    FARINA — A strong second quarter gave the Brownstown/St. Elmo Lady Bombers the lead. A solid fourth quarter secured a win.
    Brownstown/St. Elmo earned a 41-28 girls basketball victory over South Central last Thursday night.
    South Central held an 8-6 lead after one period of play, but Brownstown/St. Elmo went on an 11-3 run in the second quarter to take a 17-11 lead into intermission.
    The third period was nearly even, and BSE was clinging to a seven-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

  • Vandals split wrestling duals at...

    SHELBYVILLE — Two early-season tests.
    That's one way to look at last Wednesday's wrestling duals at Shelbyville High School.
    And for the Vandalia Vandals, the results were mixed.
    Shelbyville defeated Vandalia, 39-24.
    But the Vandals ended the night on a positive note by beating Taylorville, 52-19.
    The dual with Shelbyville was the most intense one of the night, and the hosts were able to secure some close wins to knock off the Vandals.

  • Area boys roundup: Ramsey boys...

    RAMSEY — A big fourth quarter propelled Ramsey to a 51-49 come-from-behind win over Cowden-Herrick on Friday.
    The Rams trailed 36-30 entering the fourth quarter. But Ramsey outscored Cowden-Herrick, 21-13, in the final frame to pull out the win.
    Brady Reiss and Michael Camez scored 11 points apiece for the Rams.

  • TOURNEY CHAMPS

    BETHALTO — The trip to Bethalto produced quite of a bit of hardware for the Vandalia Vandals.
    With six wrestlers in title matches, the Vandalia Community High School wrestling team took first place at the 2014 Civic Memorial Holiday Tournament on Saturday.
    "I thought we did a real nice job," Vandalia Coach Jason Clay said. "We looked pretty good. We attacked more. We faced some good opponents, and we had some good individual performances."

  • Lady Vandals earn overtime win

    CENTRALIA — A great finish definitely made up for a poor start for the Vandalia Lady Vandals.
    Vandalia's girls got it done in crunch time, pulling out an exciting 56-53 win over Christ Our Rock Lutheran in overtime on Tuesday night.
    The Lady Vandals overcame a double-digit deficit with a late rally to force overtime. The visitors then held off the Silver Stallions in the extra period.
