  • Beasley ties school record for wins

    Senior Connor Beasley tied the school record for wins by a pitcher, and junior Levi Maxey hit a grand slam last Thursday to lead St. Elmo past Beecher City, 8-2.

    Beasley struck out 15 batters over six innings of work to record the 30th win of his career, tying the school standard set by Logan Mahon.

    Earlier in the season, Beasley set the school record with 19 strikeouts in one game.

    Maxey’s grand slam was the key hit in a seven-run fourth inning for the Eagles (6-5).

  • Hawkins leads SIUE to title

    Vandalia graduate Kyle Hawkins pitched the conference championship-clinching game for the Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville club baseball team on Saturday.

    On a rainy afternoon, Hawkins helped the Cougars win the District VI North Conference title with an 8-6 win against the University of Illinois, last season’s World Series runner-up.

    The regular season ended with SIUE at 13-3 and 11-1 in conference play.

    The Vandalia fifth- and sixth-grade student councils hosted a local competition in the Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center’s Homers for Health home run derby.

    All entrants hit whiffle balls off of a tee, and received up to four points, depending on how far their hit traveled.

    The boys and girls winners in each grade division advance to the championship round in Forest Park on May 10, and will also get to meet St. Louis Cardinals players David Freese, Matt Holliday and Allen Craig.

    All proceeds go to the hospital.

  • Bruno signs with Fontbonne

    Vandalia senior Amber Bruno on Monday signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Fontbonne University in St. Louis.

  • South Central makes cuts in athletics for '13-'14

    Another school in Fayette County has been forced to make budget cuts, and those cuts will affect athletics.

    South Central District 403’s board of education last Wednesday approved budget cuts for next school year, and those cuts included several in the area of athletics.

    In addition to the cuts, a fee of $40 will be applied to students who play one sport and $60 for students who play two or more sports.

  • Lady Aces win big vs. Lady Vandals

    VANDALIA – Senior Becca Oldham tossed a three-hitter and four Lady Aces had a two-hit game on Monday in a big road win at Vandalia.

    Mulberry Grove scored in every inning to back up Oldham’s gem during a 17-1 victory in a makeup game from April 16 played as the second game of a doubleheader for Vandalia.

    The Lady Aces (8-2) scored three times in both the first and second innings before doubling their run total in the third.

  • Lady Vandals fall in pair of conference games

    VANDALIA – The Lady Vandals weren’t playing their best softball early in Monday’s game against Litchfield, but they were playing well enough to stay in the game.

    Unfortunately, the third out in the second inning proved difficult to get, as Litchfield pounded out four two-run hits with two outs to break open the game on the way to an 18-5 South Central Conference victory.

  • Track teams to have senior day on Thursday

    Because so many track meets have been canceled due to inclement weather so far this season, a home meet has been added to the Vandalia boys and girls track schedules.

    Litchfield will come to Vandalia on Thursday for a meet at 4:15 p.m., and Vandalia will use the event as senior day.

    Prior to the meet, Vandalia expected to try to get more teams to come to the event.

    The boys will honor Wade Cowger and Ryan Ambuehl, while the girls will recognize Sierah Ruffner, Makenzie Roberts, Emily Miles and Heidi Goldsmith.
