  • NTC Tournament to begin next Tuesday for area girls

    Two local teams will travel to Beecher City High School next week for the National Trail Conference girls basketball tournament.

    Brownstown/St. Elmo and South Central drew the two lowest seeds in the seven-team event, but both will look to pull some upsets and make it to the final day.

    The tournament schedule follows.

    Tuesday, Nov. 26
    Game 1: Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City vs. Dieterich, 5:30 p.m.
    Game 2: Altamont vs. South Central, 7 p.m.
    Game 3: Neoga vs. Brownstown/St. Elmo, 8:30 p.m.

  • Lady Cougars fall in season-opener vs. CHBC

    The Lady Cougars started slow, but eventually got rolling in a season-opening loss to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

    South Central fell begin 10-0 in the first quarter, but finished with a strong second half in falling, 39-26, to its National Trail Conference rival.

    Freshman Alannah Sigrist paced the Lady Cougars (0-1, 0-1 NTC) with nine points in the loss, and senior Gwen Lewis and freshman Abby Hahn each scored four.

  • Ramsey falls short by seven in season-opening loss

    Ramsey coach Wendy Cook said before the season that the cooperative agreement with Mulberry Grove was going to benefit her team.

    And it almost produced a victory in the season-opener.

    The two players who came over from Mulberry Grove combined to score 36 points on Tuesday in a 58-51 loss to Sandoval.

    Kayla Zimmerman, a junior, led all scorers with 22 points, and Kate Jolliff, a senior, added 14 point and led the team with eight rebounds. Each made two 3-pointers in the game for the Lady Rams (0-1).

  • Four local players earn all-conference honors in NTC

    Four local volleyball players have been honored by the National Trail Conference, with one player earning first-team all-conference honors.

    St. Elmo/Brownstown sophomore Gabi Moore was the lone area player named to the first team, and South Central senior Lincoln Brasel earned second-team honors.

    Getting honorable mention nods were SEB senior Bethany Oberlink and South Central junior Maria Brasel.

    Haylee Mathis, a St. Anthony senior, was named the conference Most Valuable Player.

    Both BSE and South Central both finished 4-5.

  • Strobel finishes 29th at state cross country meet; meets time and place goals

    All Vandalia junior Ben Strobel wanted to do at this year's Illinois High School Association Class A state cross country meet was to finish with a faster time and a better place than he did as a sophomore.

    Check and check.

    Strobel finished the 5K race in 15:48 to finish 29th in the field of 208 runners on Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria, besting last season's finish by 49 places and 27 seconds.

    "I wasn't as happy as I thought I was going to be," Strobel said. "I was hoping to do better."

  • Vandals Insider: Opportunity is season's theme

    VANDALIA – When looking at the facts, many could argue that this season will be a struggle for the Vandals.

    But as long as the players don’t give up on themselves, coach Brian Buscher said, they will have a chance to be competitive.

    “Our theme for the year is opportunity,” he said. “We have an opportunity to be in ballgames and win ballgames, but that’s all I can guarantee them.

  • Lady Vandals insider: scoring to be replaced

    VANDALIA – More than half of the points that the Lady Vandals scored last season were put in by a pair of players not back with the team.

    Amber Bruno (563) was lost to graduation and senior Megan Godoyo (179) suffered a knee injury during volleyball, leaving a scoring void on the team.

    But coach Michelle McNary isn’t necessarily worried about replacing them, because of her team’s balance.

  • Wrestling insider: Success of talented Vandals squad starts in practice

    VANDALIA – The ability to become a winner starts in practice.

    And while that is true for all sports, it takes on extra meaning in wrestling, an individualized sport where athletes can get better just by practicing against others with more talent.

    With a roster filled with numerous wrestlers who are potential state-qualifiers, Vandalia’s practices are expected to be hard-fought every day of the season, and that’s just the way coach Jason Clay likes it.

  • Warriors insider: new faces to contribute

    PATOKA – The Warriors were already going to be a competitive team with all of last season’s players returning.

    But add in a very talented freshman and a well-rounded transfer, and it makes Patoka arguably the best team among the seven in the area.

    Jered Cain, who scored more than 1,000 points in the past three seasons with the junior high team, will fall into a starting role with the Warriors, and proved during the summer that he can make a difference.
