  • Hawkins helps SIUE reach NCBA World Series

    Vandalia graduate Kyle Hawkins pitched a complete game in the quarterfinals of the District VI Tournament to help Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville’s club baseball team reach the World Series.
    The No. 2 Cougars beat third-seeded Ohio State, 2-1, in that game – with Hawkins striking out four and allowing no earned runs – and went on to beat No. 1 Southeast Missouri St., 3-0, in the semifinals and Ohio State in Columbus in the championship game of the double-elimination tournament.

  • PHOTOS: YMCA hosts MLB Hit, Pitch and Run competition

    The YMCA held a regional competition in Major League Baseball's national Hit, Pitch and Run contest.

    Twelve boys and six girls took part in the event last Wednesday, with six boys and six girls advancing to the sectional competition.

    That will be held in Vandalia on May 19, and the YMCA needs volunteers to help make the event a success.

    Those interested in volunteering should call the YMCA at 283-1258. Registration for the participants begins at 3:30 p.m.

  • Area Prep Roundup (May 11)

    TOURNAMENTS
    A pair of tournaments featuring local teams will take place on Saturday.

    In Greenville, the Ish Smith Classic will feature the Vandalia baseball team with two games at Greenville College’s Robert E. Smith Field.

    The Vandals will face Pinckneyville at 10:30 a.m., and then take on Red Bud at about 12:30 p.m.

    In St. Elmo, the Egyptian-Illini Conference softball tournament will be running all day.

    Vandalia's baseball and softball teams will celebrate their seniors prior to Wednesday's games against Southwestern.

    The senior presentations will begin 5-10 minutes before the 4:30 p.m. start time of each game.

    Vandalia baseball and softball against Litchfield have been canceled for Friday. There will not be a makeup date for the games. Thursday's games against Pana will also not be rescheduled.
