  • Lady Vandals get first regional win since '07, but fall to Carlyle in semis

    CARLYLE – After picking up their first regional tournament win since 2007 on Monday, the Lady Vandals were unable to get past the semifinals.

    Carlyle and starter Paige Rakers were too much for the Lady Vandals to handle, as Rakers used mixed speeds to strike out 14 batters and allow just one hit in a 5-0 win for Carlyle.

    “She did a nice job, and I think our girls were a little intimidated, especially after that first changeup,” Buscher said. “It was a rough day at the plate for us.”

  • Vandals fall short in 12-inning regional battle

    CARLINVILLE – A day after returning to Carlinville to resume a regional quarterfinal game in the 12th inning, the Vandals got right to work.

    Unfortunately for them, Carlinville was just as ready to play.

    Junior Carson Smith doubled and scored on an error in the top of the 12th inning, but a Vandalia error in the bottom of the inning allowed the winning run to score in a 6-5 loss.

  • Seven Jr. Vandals qualify for state meet

    Seven Jr. Vandals qualified for the Illinois Elementary School Association Class AA state track meet, with six girls and one boy placing at last Saturday's sectional.

    The meet will be held this  Friday and Saturday at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria.

    Eighth-grader Curtis Gordon qualified in two events, tying his school record of 12 feet in the pole vault to place first at the Pana Sectional, and finishing second in the 110-meter hurdles.

  • Ruffner makes state for 3rd time

    Vandalia senior Sierah Ruffner will be making her third trip to the state track meet on Thursday, and will be looking to make the event finals for the first time in her career.

    Ruffner cleared 5 feet, 2 inches to meet the automatic state-qualifying standard in the high jump and place third at last Thursday’s sectional meet in Carlinville.

    But unlike in her freshman and junior seasons, Ruffner is hoping that she will clear 5 feet, 2 inches at the state preliminaries to qualify for Saturday’s state finals.

  • Lady Vandals get first regional win since 2007

    Vandalia's softball tem held off a late rally on Monday to earn its first win in a regional tournament since 2007.

    Wesclin scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but that would be one run short in a 7-6 win for the Lady Vandals, who now play No. 1 seed Carlyle at Carlyle on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

    Junior Megan Godoyo threw a complete game, striking out four and allowing no earned runs, as Vandalia (4-21) committed six errors in just its fifth regional tournament win in the past 16 seasons.

  • Vandalia/Carlinville suspended after 11 innings in regional quarterfinals

    CARLINVILLE  — Because there are no lights at Carlinville's high school baseball field, the regional quarterfinal game between Vandalia and Carlinville was suspended after 11 innings on Monday due to impending darkness.

    Tied at 4-4, the game will resume at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon in Carlinville, with the winner facing No. 1 seed Litchfield in the regional semifinals at Vandalia on Wednesday.

  • St. Elmo's Hill, Patoka's Issak make state

    Two local athletes have qualified for the Illinois High School Association state track meet after placing at the Newton Sectional on Friday.

    St. Elmo junior Molly Hill will become a three-time state qualifier in the discus, after advancing with a throw of 101 feet, 6 inches.

    She placed seventh in the state last season.

    Patoka freshman Taylor Issak will make her first state appearance after qualifying in the 300-meter hurdles, with a time of 47.96 seconds, which is the 11th fastest sectional time among qualifiers.

  • Sports schedule changes: May 10-11

    The Egyptian-Illini Conference softball tournament has been moved from St. Elmo to Mulberry Grove due to poor field conditions in St. Elmo. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

    The Vandalia softball team will play a makeup game at Roxana on Friday at 4:30 p.m. That will be the final conference game of the season.

    The St. Elmo baseball team will travel to Mulberry Grove for Friday's game at 4:15 p.m.

  • Ruffner qualifies for state for Lady Vandals

    Vandalia senior Sierah Ruffner will make her third trip to the state track meet after qualifying in the high jump at Thursday night's sectional meet in Carlinville.

    Ruffner cleared the automatic state-qualifying height of 5 feet, 2 inches to place third at the sectional, and will jump at state next Thursday at the Class A state preliminaries on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

    She has cleared 5 feet, 5 inches this season, and will be looking to better her best jump at the state meet, which is just 5 feet.
