  • Seven Jr. Vandals qualify for state meet

    Seven Jr. Vandals qualified for the Illinois Elementary School Association Class AA state track meet, with six girls and one boy making the meet.

    Eighth-grader Curtis Gordon qualified in two events, tying his school record of 12 feet in the pole vault to place first at the Pana Sectional, and finishing second in the 110-meter hurdles.

    For the girls, three seventh-graders and three eighth-graders will make the trip to the Eastside Centre in East Peoria on Friday and Saturday.

  • St. Elmo's Hill, Patoka's Issak make state

    Two local athletes have qualified for the Illinois High School Association state track meet after placing at the Newton Sectional on Friday.

    St. Elmo junior Molly Hill will become a three-time state qualifier in the discus, after advancing with a throw of 101 feet, 6 inches.

    She placed seventh in the state last season.

    Patoka freshman Taylor Issak will make her first state appearance after qualifying in the 300-meter hurdles, with a time of 47.96 seconds, which is the 11th fastest sectional time among qualifiers.

  • Sports schedule changes: May 10-11

    The Egyptian-Illini Conference softball tournament has been moved from St. Elmo to Mulberry Grove due to poor field conditions in St. Elmo. The tournament begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

    The Vandalia softball team will play a makeup game at Roxana on Friday at 4:30 p.m. That will be the final conference game of the season.

    The St. Elmo baseball team will travel to Mulberry Grove for Friday's game at 4:15 p.m.

  • Ruffner qualifies for state for Lady Vandals

    Vandalia senior Sierah Ruffner will make her third trip to the state track meet after qualifying in the high jump at Thursday night's sectional meet in Carlinville.

    Ruffner cleared the automatic state-qualifying height of 5 feet, 2 inches to place third at the sectional, and will jump at state next Thursday at the Class A state preliminaries on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

    She has cleared 5 feet, 5 inches this season, and will be looking to better her best jump at the state meet, which is just 5 feet.

  • Williams – Brouk

    Aubrey Ione Williams and Adam James Brouk, both of Fenton, Mo., have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage.

  • Seniors Cowger, Ambuehl win SCC championships

    GILLESPIE – Seniors Ryan Ambuehl and Wade Cowger set school records to each earn a South Central Conference individual track championship, and both finished second in another event.

    Racing at Gillespie High School, Cowger took an easy win in the 800-meter run (2:01.22), and Ambuehl won a 100-meter sprint at the end of the 400-meter dash (:51.36) to get the win.

    “Those guys worked hard and reaped the benefits,” said coach Jane Bell. “It’s always great to have conference champions.”

  • Jr. Vandals break two conference records

    The Vandalia Jr. High track teams had five individual conference champions at Tuesday’s Jr. Mid-State Conference meet in Pana.

  • Godoyo shines in return to Lady Vandals

    VANDALIA – It was a long time coming.

    Junior Megan Godoyo made her first appearance for the Lady Vandals since she was a freshman last Wednesday and immediately showed why she has been missed so much the past two seasons.

    Pitching at about 80 percent of her full strength, Godoyo struck out six over five innings of work to put Vandalia in position to take a 2-1 South Central Conference win from Hillsboro.

  • Beasley's record spring continues with 31st win in no-hitter

    The record-setting spring continued for St. Elmo senior Connor Beasley.

    Pitching in the second game of a doubleheader last Wednesday, Beasley pitched a no-hitter, striking out 19 batters to tie his own school record in a 1-0 win for the Eagles. He had previously struck out 19 batters on April 8.

    With the win, Beasley set the school record for career wins with 31. Logan Mahon had previously held that record.

    Ramsey's Waylon Davis was the tough-luck loser in the game, allowing just two hits and one walk over his six innings of work.

  • IHSA regional softball, baseball starts Monday

    The Illinois High School Association baseball and softball regional tournaments begin on Monday.

    All games that are played on Monday will be played at the higher-seeded team's school. There is no play-in game at the St. Elmo softball regional.

    Games scheduled for any day later in the week will be played at the regional host's school.
