  • Vandalia beats Greenville for third in own tourney

    There was plenty of positive takeaway for the Vandalia volleyball squad after it finished third in its own tournament on Saturday by defeating Greenville for the second time in four days.

    The Vandals rallied from a nine-point deficit to win the second set against eventual tournament champion Carlyle.
    Vandalia allowed Greenville to score just two points on its own serves in downing the Comets 25-11 to win the third-place game.

    Every starter drew praise from coach Allison Brown after the tournament.

  • St. Elmo/Beecher to play for EIC title

    St. Elmo and Beecher City will battle for the Egyptian Illini Conference baseball championship Thursday night in Vandalia at 7 p.m.

    Patoka and Brownstown will play the third-place game in Vandalia at 4:30 p.m.

    Luke Levitt threw a no-hitter for Beecher City, as they shut out Patoka 10-0 to advance to the championship game.

  • VCHS HOF to induct four new members

    Four new members will be inducted into the Vandalia Community High School Athletic Hall of Fame in a ceremony at 6:40 p.m. at the football field on Friday.

    Jeni (Marquardt) Boyd is a 1988 graduate of VCHS who played volleyball, basketball and softball. She hit above .500 her senior softball season in helping lead the Vandals to a regional title. She was also a member of the 1985 volleyball and basketball regional champion teams.

  • Late TD gives Vandals win at Marquette

    ALTON – The football annals at all levels are dominated by players and coaches who demonstrate toughness and ferocity, but Vandalia coach John Stout broke the rules of those books, showing raw emotion following his team’s 13-12 comeback win against Marquette Catholic last Friday.

    Working without a timeout and facing a 74-yard field with just over two minutes left in the game, the Vandals ran a nearly flawless 2-minute drill that culminated with a 6-yard touchdown catch by senior Matt Hoffman with 36.7 seconds left in the game.

  • Vandalia picks up road win at Marquette Catholic

    The Vandalia High School football team evened its season record on Friday, defeating Marquette Catholic 13-12 after Matt Hoffman caught a 6-yard touchdown with 36.7 seconds left in the game.

    The Vandals will host Litchfield next Friday at 7 p.m.

  • Freshmen lose to Roxana

    Wade Harre gives a thumbs up after carrying for a first down in last Thursday's freshman football game against Roxana. There wasn't too much for the Vandals to cheer about, though. The game included the ejection of a Vandalia player and a shouting match between two fans behind the Vandals bench, as the Vandalia squad was shut out by Roxana, 20-0. The Vandals will play at home Thursday against Wesclin at 6 p.m.

  • JV football shuts out Roxana

    Ryan Ambuehl looks to his left as he rushes for a big gain during Monday's JV football game. Ambuehl scored two touchdowns and made the tackle for a safety during Vandalia's 36-0 win against Roxana. Alex Newsom scored twice for the Vandals and Luke Smith added a score of his own. The Vandals (2-1) will face Marquette Catholic at home next Monday at 6 p.m.

    Patoka moved to 5-0 after defeating Sandoval (25-16, 25-9) on Monday. The JV team lost 25-13, 25-20.

    Monday, Sept. 13
    at Altamont
    South Central improved to 6-1 after a 25-13, 25-12 win against Altamont on Monday. Sarah Kramer scored 16 points in the match.
    The JV squad won, beating Altamont in three sets, 25-8, 19-25, 25-15, and the freshmen/sophomore team swept Altamont 25-14, 25-11.
