  • Tough Raymond squad snaps St. Elmo's winning streak

    ST. ELMO – St. Elmo High School’s volleyball team had been on a torrid pace since finishing fifth at the National Trail Conference Tournament three weeks ago.

    Coming into their Class 1A Sectional first-round match on Tuesday, the Eagles had lost only one set since the NTC, while being crowned both the Egyptian-Illini Conference and regional champions.

    But the team’s streak came to end against Raymond-Lincolnwood after the Eagles’ strength was challenged early and often by the 32-5 Lancers, who defeated St. Elmo, 25-18, 25-23.

  • Cougars fight to finish in tight sectional battle against Cumberland

    ST. ELMO – For the second straight season, Cumberland eliminated South Central from the sectional tournament, defeating the Cougars in three sets, 17-25, 28-26, 22-25 on Tuesday.

    In a fierce back-and-forth battle, coach Mary Brimberry said her team never gave up during the Class 1A Sectional, which especially showed in the second set after the Cougars erased a six-point deficit to take the set.

    “I told the girls, ‘We can be sad that the season is over, but we can’t be sad with how we played,’” Brimberry said.

  • VCHS gets funds for all-weather track

    Vandalia Community High School Superintendent Rich Well said construction of an all-weather track will begin “as soon as possible” after city council members, on Monday, approved using Tax Increment Financing money to help fund the project.

    Having already secured funds from four other entities, receiving $65,000 in TIF money per year for the next five years allows the district to finance the $500,000 project that will allow VCHS to host home track meets and benefit all its athletes and students, as well as the community.

  • Patoka, St. Elmo and South Central to play for regional titles

    The Patoka, St. Elmo and South Central High School volleyball teams will all be playing for regional championships on Saturday.

    Patoka, the No. 3 seed in the Raymond Regional, will face No. 1 Raymond-Lincolnwood at Raymond-Lincolnwood High School at 2 p.m. The Warriors defeated No. 6 Mt. Olive and No. 2 Morrisonville to advance on Thursday.

    St. Elmo, the No. 1 seed in the Strasburg Regional, will face No. 2 Neoga at Stewardson-Strasburg High School at 5 p.m. The Eagles defeated No. 8 Brownstown and No. 5 Stew-Stras to advance on Wednesday.

  • Raymond Regional Volleyball Tournament preview

    Patoka and Mulberry Grove will be playing in the Raymond Regional Volleyball Tournament at Raymond-Lincolnwood High School. Patoka, which advanced to the sectional final last season, will be a No. 3 seed in this season's regional. The Warriors are led by senior Paige Myers. If Patoka wins its first-round match against No. 6 Mt. Olive, it will face either No. 2 Morrisonville or No. 7 Mulberry Grove, which was defeated by Morrisonville, its first-round opponent, during the regular season.
