    The following Vandalia sporting events have been canceled for Thursday, Jan. 20.

    •High School wrestling Senior Night vs. EAWR/Carlinville (makeup date is Jan. 26 at 6 p.m.)
    •High School girls basketball at Greenville (makeup date is Feb. 2 at 6 p.m.)
    •Junior High volleyball vs. Mulberry Grove (no makeup date yet)
    •Fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball at Hillsboro (no makeup date yet)

    The following South Central High School sporting events have been canceled for Thursday, Jan. 20.

  • Area Girls Basketball Scoring Leaders (Jan. 20)
  • Area Boys Basketball Scoring Leaders (Jan. 20)
  • VJHS volleyball opens season

    The Vandalia seventh-grade volleyball team opened its season by finishing seventh at the Edwardsville Lincoln Tournament on Saturday.

    Vandalia was 0-3 in pool play, but defeated Southwestern in the seventh-place match, 19-25, 25-21, 15-10.

    Its opponents in pool play were:

    •Edwardsville Liberty: 16-25, 22-25
    •St. Norbert: 15-25, 13-25
    •Lovejoy: 13-25, 21-25

    Mindy Ritchey paced the Vandals with 25 service points and six service aces. Faye Etcheson had nine service points and five service aces.

  • NTC Tournament opens Monday

    The 2011 National Trail Conference boys basketball tournament will open with play-in games on Monday at Altamont.

    St. Elmo, the No. 9 seed, will face eighth-seeded Beecher City at 5 p.m.

    The Eagles defeated Beecher City, 77-65, on Dec. 17 at the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament.

    The winner will face No. 1 Teutopolis on Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.

    Brownstown drew the No. 11 seed and opens play at approximately 8 p.m. on Monday against No. 6 Stew-Stras.

  • Grapperhaus named Player of the Week

    South Central grad Isaac Grapperhaus has been coming off the bench about 50 percent of the time for the Illinois College men's basketball team.  But if he keeps making field goals at his current rate, he'll probably be starting 100 percent of the time.

  • SC opens MTC Tournament with win against Clay City

    FARINA – The South Central High School boys basketball team used consistent scoring and got strong play from its bench players during a 64-31 win on Monday against Clay City/Noble in the first round of the Midland Trail Conference Tournament.

    The seventh-seeded Cougars (5-13) ensured they didn't overlook the No. 10 Wolves by recording four steals and posting a 16-7 lead by the end of the first quarter. Senior Taylor Cain secured six of those points, while fellow seniors Derek Harmeier and Nathan Hill added four each.

  • Vandals go 2-0 at dual; will celebrate seniors on Thursday

    Anthony Fladeland’s return to the Vandalia High School wrestling team paid its first significant  benefits on Saturday.

    Sidelined until the Princeton Invite on Jan. 8 with an injury, Fladeland pinned Monticello’s Dylan Benson in 2:49 to give the Vandals their first points against the Sages during a dual meet which they won, 49-24.

    Before his match, Vandalia trailed 12-0 after junior Dayin Godberson was pinned with one second left in his match, and Sean Newcomb was pinned in the first round.
